Looking back, ALL the Star Wars movies are pretty bad, except the original

And I think Star Wars 4 (the original) is no where near the #20 movie of all time. Aside from the revolutionary special effects the plot is fairly weak.
It's a film directly inspired by Flash Gordon and Saturday morning adventure serials. Of course the plot is going to be weak. However, it's execution is almost flawless. The plot is constantly moving with each scene meaning something to the overarching story. No frame of film is wasted and the movie flies by breathtakingly fast. The editing is perfect, the visuals are incredible, and Lucas's direction is impeccable.
This film's reputation has suffered over the years simply because it was written and directed by a man many of us have come to hate. Believe it or not, however, there was a time when Lucas wasn't full of himself and was a brilliant filmmaker.

The Help is top 250?
Interstellar is massively overpraised too. Once the initial spectacle wears off, the absolute absurdity of that ending stands out. The book shelf, really? A top 50 film of all time?

Sometimes the best movies have the most underwhelming solutions. How many people were upset to find out (spoiler warning) Rosebud was simply a sleigh at the end of Citizen Kane?

And while I'm at it, the most underrated, by a country mile:
221- Jaws - A movie lover's movie, the movie of movies, the one that rescued Hollywood only to have imitators and sequels nearly kill it.
Absolutely

Twelve Angry Men was a good movie when I watched it in high school. I'd hardly consider myself back then as "thinking I was educated." It's not about the law, it's about breaking the notion of groupthink and standing up for what you feel is right, or, at the very least, doing due diligence when you are tasked to do something.
Rex, I think you of all posters would appreciate the perspective of the main juror who is the lone different voice and is standing up for that voice throughout that movie. That's literally all you do on these forums.

How in the hell is the Green Mile ranked 40th? I mean, I wasn't aware the movie had that many fans.
Oh, and Life is Beautiful is a bad movie not because its unrealistic, which is a silly critique of the film, but that it is objectively terrible.
I love Interstellar, and I'm not sure I understand the complaint about the bookcase being rendered in four dimensions in a three dimensional space. A) that was mind-blowingly cool and B) it was just an instrument that allowed him to send a message back in time to his daughter, so she could solve the equation. It's not like the bookcase itself matters. I get why people don't like it, as it hinges not on action sequences but theoretical physics. Not a huge market for that.
I can also see why people wouldn't like Gone Girl, though there's a lot to unpack in that movie. I'm a big fan, while admitting that it's not everyone's cup of tea.

It was like Frank Capra got to direct the last 30 minutes of 2001

That's a great movie. In my humble opinion.

Agree completely with Jaws being vastly underrated

Episode Four was the original, you hack. Go troll a different board with this fricking nonsense.

Also, these are movies voted on by IMDb users, not the AFI or some other moderately legitimate source, so who gives a frick?

Jaws is my favorite movie but I'm not sure how it's underrated. I've never heard of anyone not liking it.
