Not sure if I believe him in this. Nic Cage being Aragorn in a mostly perfectly cast film would be just bizarre: LINK

I like Viggo, but I'm not totally against Cage with that part.

Given Stuart Townsend was cast and fired immediately from the role, it's not a stretch to think Cage was considered.

The Lord of the Rings film series was being developed in the mid late 90s, Cage was the man then.

So let me get this straight.

He turned down LoTR but agreed to do Sorcerers Apprentice and Season of the Witch.

In his eyes he thought, "why would I commit to a trilogy for 18 months when I could make 24 movies in the same span and make 5 times the money to buy stupid Elvis plates"

thank god he did

viggo was great for that role. id like to hear PJ's perspective though. many actors audition and never get call backs and years later it sounds better to say you turned it down

What are you talking about? Instead of being an absolutely incredible trilogy, it would have been the greatest trilogy in history and nobody would even attempt to make a movie ever again. Because it would be blasphemous to even try and compare new movies to such awesomeness.

Are you saying he didn't have a committable offer?

What's more shocking here is that he was offered the role of Neo in The Matrix.

Damn. That would have been so awesome.

They should release a special edition wit him digitally replacing Viggo in all his scenes.

Nic Cage reprises his role as Lieutenant Terrence McDonagh from Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans...in Middle Earth and as Aragorn.

[SCENE] Post-Minas Tirith battle party:

Nic Cage: What are these frickin' hobbits doing on my table.
Gandalf: There ain't no hobbits.
Nic Cage: ...Yeah, there are.
Gandalf: There ain't no hobbits.
Nic Cage: What the frick are those?
[taps one]
Nic Cage: frickin' hobbit.

[SCENE] Atop wall of Helm's Deep: Legolas and Gimli counting kills. One kill gets Aragorn's attention...

Nic Cage: Legolas. Shoot them again!
Legolas: What for?
Nic Cage: Their soul's still dancing!
[laughs hysterically]

...and finally...

[SCENE] Aragorn and company sleeping in the conquered Saruman's Tower after the March of the Ents. Pippin finds jewel of Sauron...and of course he and Merry are always a handful:

Nic Cage (to Pippin): You should drop dead you curious count. You ever think about your friends? Or your Hobbit kin? Killing them with your pesky adventures? fricking short people.
Nic Cage becomes enraged.
Nic Cage: You fricks. I hate you. I hate you both.
Nic Cage breaths heavily...then draws his sword.
Nic Cage: I should...I should...right now. Both. I should frickin' kill you frickin' both!
You're the frickin' reason Middle Earth is going down the drain!
