It is. I had considered subscribing, but I like movies and I don't feel like paying for their original TV shows and getting nothing else. As a long term deal, this is really stupid of them. I couldn't care less about their made-for series. I'll go straight to Hulu.

As long as they still have It's Always Sunny, The Office, Parks and Rec, and their original content, it's still worth every penny plus more for me.

No one cares.

Netflix is becoming what we all knew would happen one day. An off cable, Ala cart, original programming company with the occasional non original content.

Hulu + Netflix + HBOgo= no reason for cable

Am I the only one tht feels like Netflix wants to become just another channel?

This started in 2011 when they decided not to renew their deal with Starz. They were at a crossroads back then, Starz wanted NetFlix to go to a tiered pricing model and even HBO had said they'd give NetFlix "meaningful content" (probably the deal Amazon got) if they charged more. NetFlix said our customers are watching more TV series than movies, and because we know exactly what they like to watch we think we can produce things they'll want to watch. 4 years later here we are and they are very much comparable to HBO in many ways and not the cable TV disruptor we had all hoped for.

I like being able to find some good movies on Netflix, I don't go to the theater anymore so I am always way behind on new movies. Not going to complain though, there are other ways to watch movies and I love their original content.

Watching new movies is really simple and not that expensive, it's called DVDs by mail. Spend $20-$40 on a decent ripping program and you can even watch them whenever you want to keep the supply of movies coming in.

I'm just looking for the best catalog of movies. I don't buy DVD's and I'd love to quit paying way too much for cable. Now, I have to find the best library I can get and clearly Netflix doesn't want to fill that need.

I'll add Prime to that simply because I like the option to be able to rent new releases and their original content, especially the kid stuff, is getting better

There is no good solution out for this right now. No all you can eat subscription has a good selection and the movie industry prices digital rentals at ridiculously high prices $3+ for SD versions and $4-$5+ for HD versions. RedBox and NetFlix DVDs by mail are still the best options for economical access to recent movies.

Yep, Prime is what I use for the new stuff that I really can't wait to watch.

Prime is the shite for the shipping alone. Great value. I have Prime and Netflix. Love them both.

Narcos is getting decent buzz on this board, but it was just released. I bet it dies down in a week or 2 and then we only see a random thread about it once every month or 2 as opposed to the busy weekly threads for hit shows released more traditionally.

I think if they released an episode every week at a set time the amount of talk about it would stay steady but most of us just binge watch

Seems weird the reason they aren't keeping widely popular movies is that their main rivals (cable and other subscription platforms) have them and people can see them there.

No, this move makes sense. Currently, Netflix and Amazon Prime share a lot of movies, which doesn't give them any competitive advantage. With this move, they will free up a lot of capital to invest in their own original content that won't be available on any other platform. Win.

this is kind of a hijack, but is there a site that you can see when things are going to come to netflix?

I desperately need S7 of Parks and Rec on there ASAP.

It makes business sense to a degree, but it's not necessarily a "win" though. It's only a win if their content stays at a premium level, and thus they keep people interested. if their shows start dipping in quality, people won't be as interested in their new programming (which is what they're spending that saved capital on).

So while it will likely be a win for them, at least in the short term, that all depends on if they can keep the quality of programming up.

Netflix has been making data driven decisions for a long time now, and they have some great data. So although initially I don't feel like this is a good move, I'm assuming the data tells a different story.

I think people want 2 or 3 services to cover their Movie and TV needs, at least those that do cut the cable, not 5 or 6. I'm not sure this fits that mold, but it could make Netflix a major player in the HBO space, where they are currently trending.

Personally, I don't like it. The less content is not a good thing for me. I would hate to have 6 different subscriptions to worry about. If Netflix becomes Netflix content only, or close to it, I'd probably cancel.

However, if they stick to the Netflix content+Indie Movies+ Select TV I could see it being ok. I don't have Hulu and this change makes me consider getting Hulu. That and it makes Prime more important for me.

This is basically what I am talking about in my previous post.

If NF goes away from content in favor of their own (quantity vs. quality, so to speak), then people may tire of them, especially if the quality doesn't hold up to the bar they've set with their original content so far. I mean, even HBO has a pretty wide selction of movies in its collection.

If Netflix starts to rely solely on its original programming, then it becomes "just another channel" and may not keep the same viewership it's become used to.

They have a pretty good model set up though. They KNOW what people are watching (as opposed to guessing using increasingly irrelevant survey methods) and use that to decide what to fund. They even have done a pretty good job of picking foreign shows to become "NetFlix Originals" like The Fall and Peaky Blinders. I'd also imagine when they showed Breaking Bad in the UK the day after it aired here that they did some NetFlix branding at the beginning of each episode.
