That’s not really true. It’s manipulated in production to create more drama but they aren’t really scripting out lines for everyone.

They just let people get drunk and cut together clips of them to make super dramatic scenes each week.

Nathan takes real people and puts them in an absurd situation made by him and lets them react naturally (which usually comes off extremely awkward and stiff)

Scion guy has had family members confirm he’s that psycho, and he confirmed it himself with his own interview. These are real people (besides the actors he hires, but even those people are in a way a part of the experiment as a whole and reacting in their own right)

I think you have a big misunderstanding of the show and Nathan Fielders work if you really think he’s out here writing lines about a guy seeing 88 for new beginnings or wrecking his Scion. Those are genuine insane people

Literally the first thing every cast member does once they get off a reality show

Do you think it’s possible that he screens people until he finds the crazy ones and then use them? Nowadays it’s easy to get an idea of what people believe from their social media pages. He might have just done his research.

I mean he shows him interviewing/screening people from the responses to his Craigslist ad in the show. It’s a part of the concept.

Yeah, I think good screening is more likely than using secret actors.

The screening too is probably more about the right person to fill the situation/concept he’s looking to build more than looking for the craziest people

Plenty of completely normal people that went on Nathan for You

Are you saying that this doesn’t happen? Do you want examples?

Working through the first episode and this shite is depressing. Do the later episodes not involve depressed Nathan helping depressed people?

I’m caught up. Even for Nathan’s standards, this show is odd. It’s like he’s creating his own form of cringe comedy. Now it’s super meta too because he’s one of the participants and I genuinely don’t know if he’s taking any of it seriously or not. I can’t wait to see where this goes.

It’s definitely more introspective than Nathan for you, which I think is what you are describing as depressing.

It definitely keeps up that same theme, but part of what makes it funny/interesting is that he toes that line where you are never really sure what’s a bit and what isn’t

Probably not a show for everybody. But I find it hilarious and incredibly creative

ETA and I have to ask, did you notice the fake actor that took the place of the real guy at the end of the episode? A lot of people really whiffed on that scene not realizing it was Nathan rehearsing for his real talk with the first guy

I dont find myself laughing at this show at all the way I laughed at Nathan For You. And thats not to say I dislike it, its just a lot less silly than Nathan For You.

I think Fielder is trying to make a different point with this concept and I cant quite put my finger on what it is. Is this a commentary about anxiety and how hard it is to be your authentic self? Is it an experiment in exposure therapy? I'm fairly confused by this show, but I'm here for every episode and I could watch his stuff every day. He's brilliant.

Episode 2 with this MFer being hired to be a "night owl" and falling asleep 2 nights in a row might be the funniest thing I've seen in a while.

This is now my favorite show.

Ep 4… Him becoming Thomas is hilarious… especially when he moves himself into a house with roommates too.

Walks back in the house in Oregon and the kid is 15 now

Layer on layer on layer. I don’t even care what happens anymore. I just love watching him do it.

Most people just ask the internal question, what more could I do? Nathan actually does it.

It's like I can't even follow how many layers deep he is at times.

I am enjoying the absurdity of this show

But the last scene and the slide was fricking golden.

Just caught up on episode 4. Now that we’re a bit further into the season, I’d say the show is more captivating than funny, although there are some lol moments. I think I prefer Nathan For You for overall entertainment, but I am enjoying this show.

Saw an interesting article that put together some thoughts but maybe could have been summed up more concisely.

For anyone interested: Slate episode 4 review
