First, let's establish some rules:

1) Name the movie
2) Name the director/lead actor
3) Name who should've directed/acted

I'll start:

1) Waterworld
2) Directed by: Kevin Reynolds
3) Should've been written and directed by: George Miller

Imagine a George Miller version of Waterworld. Holy smokes that would be insane!

1. Star Trek (2009)

2. J.J. Abrams

3. Joss Whedon

Deal with it.

Sadly, almost any other director would have been an improvement - and that is very, very sad. One of the key figures in cinema over the past 40 years (arguably the key figure, from a total business model perspective) - and he fumbles the most important sequel of the past 20 years.

After Star Wars A New Hope, what happened to him? Why was Return of the Jedi so much worse than the first two? Then he returns for the prequels and they are terrible.

I think it is clear that he either didn't enjoy directing, or recognized his own limitations and got out of it for 22 years.

As a writer/producer - he was involved in both Star Wars and Indiana Jones - 2 of the best film franchises of all time. However, as you point out - after THX-1138, American Grafitti, and Star Wars (I tend to reject that nerdy "A New Hope" jazz, at least more recently - that is retconning, IMHO. The film is called "Star Wars". I'm going to adopt this policy for Star Trek - as well - if not specified, we're talking about the foundation of the brand, the seminal, inimitable 1960s television series) - he has only directed the "prequels" (basically C - grades and below for those 3 films - probably D, F, C-, respectively) and the reshoot of Red Tails, which I cannot judge because I did not watch.

His best films are as writer producer - Empire and Raiders - although his first three films as writer/director were outstanding.

He got rid of Gary Kurtz. The prequels were his way of showing off Lucasfilm's technical prowess and the story was of secondary importance.

I'm upset with him for not directing more films.

Is that a compliment?

Return of the Jedi was the best of the original trilogy.
