I know It's A Wonderful Life is one of them. How do you explain this outside of terrible marketing?

Office Space, Blade Runner, Vertigo, The Princess Bride, Fight Club, The Wizard of Oz, and The Shawshank Redemption. Just to name a few.

American psycho... Eta, I guess it didn't tank but it definitely wasn't the quotable movie it now is until after it came out on videotape.

Idiocracy seems the ultimate example (if it ever even made it to the theaters, that is.)

Dredd is a good one.

It's A Wonderful Life is only universally loved now because it was the only movie they showed during Christmas for years and it became synonymous with the holiday season.

Had that not happened, it probably wouldn't be known.

Children of Men only made $35 million at the box office compared to its $75 million budget, but was well received by critics.

IAWL did not "tank". IIRC it actually made a small profit -- it just wasn't as big as its makers expected.

A better example is The Princess Bride, which was indeed a box office flop. I recall an interview at the time where Rob Reiner complained that "kids" were not interested in the seeing the film because they thought it looked "soft".
