Fear Strikes Out (1957)
Norman Bates/Anthony Perkins plays Red Sox' s Jimmy Piersall and shows his nervous breakdown.
Some people can handle outrageous pressure, some people can't. The lucky ones can be successfully treated by a mental care professional, like Piersall.

Also:
Somebody Up There Likes Me (1956)
Paul Newman plays real-life degenrate/juvenile delinquent Rocky Graziano in his transformation from street thug to boxing champion.
Always loved this one.

Kidding, but the Disney channel had some pretty good (or at least they seemed good at the time) sports movies when I was a kid. There was Double Teamed, and basketball was featured heavily in The Luck of the Irish.

This Sporting Life (1963)
Granted, it got 100% on RT, but I feel that most people are unaware of it.
Richard Harris broke his leg while filming one of the rugby scenes.
