Wife wanted to see it. I was actually pretty hopeful going in.

There were very few silly parts that made me crack a smile. This one was made just for the kiddies and merchandizing. It is not made to try to entertain the adults dragged in by their kids like other animated movies are.

Did you enjoy Despicable Me 1 & 2?

I've had to watch Despicable Me 2 maybe three times in the past two weeks and also had watch the first one. We went and saw Minions Friday night and I wanted to shoot myself.

my nine year old didn't like it too much. Loved the despicable me movies though.

I agree. All of the funny stuff, except for the guitar scene, was in the trailers.

Ditto, here. It was ambitious and funny. I agree it was not up to typical Disney/Pixar standards on the story side. It was a good idea - and it was decent in spots.

I will give it this - it flew by, especially after they got to London.

I agree. Without Gru, they fall flat.
Odd movie, I can see how people will find offense with some scenes. (The anti-evolutionary crowd will hate the opening )

I didn't find offense, but felt there were a couple a laughs with a lot of gibberish in between.

Kids loved it though.

That was a good scene, I laughed out loud when he got the snowglobe.

Yeah, that was a good scene. I liked the king Bob montage too, but every other funny part was in the trailers.

This movie was always going to be a money grab due the immense popularity of the minions characters.

I'm pretty sure the creators knew it wasn't going to be anywhere near Despicable Me or even as good as Despicable Me 2.

This was not a Disney film. It was made by Illumination Entertainment, a company founded in 2007 and partnered with Universal for distribution.

I understand that - people's expectations for an animated film are the Disney/Pixar films, for better or worse.

Pixar has earned that rep. Since John Lasseter of Pixar took over Disney Animation post-merger, Disney Animation has also earned that rep. Tangled was the first Disney Animation movie under John Lasseter. Of course, that was followed by Wreck-It Ralph, Frozen, and Big Heron6.

These other animation studios seem to start strong then quickly fizzle, going back to Don Bluth's animation company in the 80's that was bankrupt by the mid-90's. Dreamworks started strong with Antz and then Shrek and Madagascar, but it can hardly make a profit any more even with established properties. It sounds like Illumination Entertainment might be headed down that path.

Pixar's process, and now Disney Animation's process, or making each movie once, scratching it, and starting over with lessons learned has allowed them to maintain a very high quality. Inside Out was redone 7 times before they finally got the story they wanted and liked.

Speaking of money grabs... Fox is making Ice Age 5

The Ice Age series is made by Blue Sky Studios, owned by Fox, not Dreamworks. That is another perfect example of an animation studio that started strong and fizzled out. They have not made a decent movie in quite some time. However, unlike Dreamworks, Blue Sky somehow still makes money on these terrible movies, such as Rio and Rio 2.

Minions made 115 million opening weekend. 2nd highest animation opening ever. Plus merchandise, they did what they set out to do. Hopefully, a better movie will be made with despicable me 3
