Martin Scorsese's top 10 best films from the '90s

Number 10 -- is a tie between two modern American epics. The first is Spike Lee's "Malcolm X," a biography of one of our most daring political leaders, the second: Michael Mann's "Heat," a thrilling crime drama by one of the finest filmmakers in America, with a brilliantly cold, minimal look and great performances by Bob DeNiro and Al Pacino.
Number 9 -- the Coen brothers' "Fargo."
Number 8 -- David Cronenberg's "Crash." Genuinely erotic, but also profoundly disturbing, beautifully controlled, and completely unconventional.
Number 7 -- Wes Anderson's "Bottle Rocket." I love the people in this film, who are genuinely innocent, more than even they know.
Number 6 -- Lars von Trier's "Breaking the Waves," a genuinely spiritual movie that asks what is love and what is compassion?
Number 5 -- Abel Ferrara's "Bad Lieutenant," starring my old friend and collaborator Harvey Keitel. He's always taken risks as an actor, and in the '90s, in this film in particular, he really reached his prime.
Number 4 -- Stanley Kubrick's "Eyes Wide Shut."
Number 3 -- Wu Nien-jen's "A Borrowed Life."
Number 2--"The Thin Red Line," by Terrence Malick.
And my Number 1 film of the decade -- even though it was made in the late '80s -- Tian Zhuangzhuang's "Horse Thief."
LINK
I find it interesting Scorsese has Thin Red Line at #1 (Horse Thief technically doesn't count since it came out in 1986) yet doesn't have SPR or a single Spielberg film for that matter in his top 10. Also, I'm surprised he doesn't have Pulp Fiction on his list. It seemed like a movie that would perfectly fit Scorsese's tastes considering the type of films he's made. And it's pretty cool to see Scorsese show some love for a Wes Anderson film.

Crash and Bottle Rocket don't belong on that list
Leaving off Pulp Fiction seems like a notable slur. There's nothing wrong with choices like Heat, Fargo, Breaking the Waves, Eyes Wide Shut, or his more out of the mainstream picks but they were generally not as influential or interesting to watch as PF.
Perhaps it's just a matter of taste. After Shutter Island I think his is no longer on firm ground. The Aviator wasn't exactly his best work either.

Bottle Rocket is Anderson's worst film; it's not my list but I have a hard time understanding why Rushmore isn't in its place.

I like it more than TDL and Mr. Fox. Bottle Rocket is great.
That is suchow a strange list. How can anyone put Crash in any sort of top 10 list?

That list confirms Scorsese is overrated

he must be butthurt that pulp fiction is as good or better than anything he's made

In the end, it all is really just opinions.

Some opinions have more behind them than others.

I saw it recently. I found it to be decent. The photography in that film was top notch IMO.

FWIW, this is the 1996 film by Cronenberg and not the movie that won Best Picture at the Oscars. The two movies couldn't be any more different.

I haven't seen Bottle Rocket.

It's a personal list. There are no wrong answers.

Even Goodfellas?

Crash is a very polarizing movie. Not sure if I really enjoyed it...but I can see where someone would enjoy it a lot. I am a big Cronenberg fan, but it just doesn't do it for me.

That's the only reason I included "as good" lol

I like Crash really cool movie even though it gets all homo-erotic at one point. Bad Lieutenant is a fricked up movie too.
With Scorsese still had his blog at DirectTV. I learned of a lot of good movies from his blog. One of those directors that I like just as much for his film critics as I do his films themselves.

Bottle Rocket is the only Wes Anderson film I like.
That's a solid list, and pretty darn Scorcese. I'm really surprised the Trois Coleurs trilogy did not make his list or something like Taste of Cherry. He's always been an advocate of foreign films, and those are from some burgeoning film industries (Poland and Iran).
I'm disappointed he likes von Trier, but nobody's perfect. But at least its a decent stand in for the Dogme 95 movement, even if its not an official Dogme film.

Nah, I do like Rushmore and Grand Budapest more but I really enjoy Bottle Rocket and think it is one of his better films.
I'd rather watch it than most of Scorsese's list. Thin Red Line especially. That's got to be the critically acclaimed movie that I detest the most; and that includes Crash.
