He's a good actor, not a great actor. Great actors disappear into their characters, transform into their characters. I enjoy pretty much every movie he's in and he has great screen presence, but it's always just...Leonardo DiCaprio. He just doesn't have the range to be considered "great". I haven't seen him in one role I thought was worthy of Best Actor. As for his last role he grew a beard, crawled around in the snow, and violated his vegan principles by eating real raw meat. I didn't see Hugh Glass I saw Leo clawing for an Oscar

You didn't list Basketball Diaries maybe his best role.

Is this even true? Titanic won multiple oscars and was the highest grossing film of all time, how could most filmgoers think he was one of the worst? If anything, maybe guys were sick of hearing their girlfriends talk about him.

He's Scorsese's new De Niro. Nuff said.

This is the biggest load of crap ever. If that's the case, only DDL is a great actor.

And who are you again? My point made in my earlier post applies directly to you Mr. Anonymous message board movie critic.

He's not on the level of Heston.

Great actor but he's made several movies that were total snooze fests.

"And who are you again"...are you in 7th grade? Well since you asked I just happen to be an acting coach with over 75 years of experience and 14 Oscar winners under my tutelage. Or maybe I'm just giving an opinion like everybody else does on every message board ever.

Yeah, I remember back when Titanic came out - people were asking, "why this little twerp?" opposite Winslet?

I knew Winslet would be huge after Heavenly Creatures just like Scarlett after Ghost World - but apart from a few Basketball Diary fans - Leo wasn't on the radar and Titanic really made his damn career from there - he blew up like crazy.

I guess I'm the only one that can't stand Daniel Day Lewis. Every movie I see him in is boring. Dicaprio is one of my favorites.

I loved him in what's eating Gilbert grape

If he did that movie in today's climate he would have won an Oscar for it.

--------

Jeff bridges, john lithgow off the top

Dramatic actors that have the pissed off roles gets old. Someone that can do drama or comedy equally is what impresses me.
Just stomping around fighting and bitching doesn't impress me.

I don't I if Leo is great or not. But maybe OP has a point. With this many acclaimed movies, why no Oscar? On the other hand, maybe the Oscar isn't te great barometer of acting talent we assume it is.

Yeah, when I see a Leo movie I always know it's Leo pretending to be someone, but that may be Bc he's so well known and identifiable now. Bc I get the same from guys like Pacino, Deniro, and other easily identifiable actors.

Frankly I often prefer seeing less identifiable actors. Easier to fall into the story.

I too appreciate range. I respect an actor who can do accents (looking at you, Costner), varying roles, and can sing/dance.

I don't think this is true either, in addition to basketball diaries he had already garnered a ton of praise for his performance in Gilbert grape. He was already a heart-throb for the MTV generation females so it's not like he was a nobody coming into titanic. Titanic did make him a mega-star, but to say he wasn't on the radar is asinine.
