Don Draper dies and the guy he picks up takes his name

The name Don Draper becomes eternal.
I though it was a very good episode.

I did too. Would Don Draper go back to Richard "Dick" Whitman?
Posted on 5/4/15 at 1:59 pm to biggsc
Personality wise he could go back to being Whitman. The fact he picked up a hitchhiker just rubs me the wrong way.

Tremendous episode. The last two have given us the much needed momentum the first three did not. It looks as if all the people predicting Don would "die" and leave advertising were correct.
Will he return to New York again? I really want to see one more Peggy and Don scene. Although if his last scene with the main cast is the one with Betty in this episode it was a damn good one.

So he just abandons his 3 children? That seems out of character.

Moving away and starting your own life is the same as abandoning them? Most of the scenes with Don and the kids this year have hinted at how well they are doing without him anyway.

What? Sally is doing fine but Bobby is only like 8 and Gene is only like 4 they need their dad.

They're fine, too. As far as they're concerned (at least in Gene's case), Henry is their dad.

Should Bert have reappeared last night? I sorta think not.

He has to return. No way this show goes three more hours without a scene with Don and everyone else.
Side question - Did the preview suggest that Pete is fricking one of Sally's friends?

Exactly. They made this quite clear in the scene where Don is making the milkshakes and Henry shows up. And Sally is no longer waiting on her Dad for anything. Betty even stressed how independent she has become.
Don's whole story this half season has been about stripping away everything that has kept him and his persona in place for the last 20 years. Just because he loses the Don persona and leaves New York and advertising doesn't mean he's abandoning his children. If anything I think Sally would respect the shite out of him for it.
He's almost left to go to California multiple times before so staying in New York for his kids is not a top priority.

I liked it. Of course, I've always enjoyed when MM has gone down a weird road.

Anyone else get the feeling that Don is losing/has lost his mind?
I'm not sure about losing his mind, but I've surmised losing it all will be Don's fate in the finale.
The numerous flashback's to his childhood poverty, and clause in his contract that he could lose his partnership for bad behavior, pretty much sealed his fate in my book.
Whether he's felt unworthy of his success and has purposely sabotaged his career is another matter.

Finally all caught up. I don't think that Don has lost his mind. I do think Dick Whitman is shedding another skin now that he's hit another wall of unhappiness and complacency. It's like he has life ADD. When shite gets totally mundane or unhappy for him he gets all "shiny things" and moves on to something else. Sometimes he comes back to it. Sometimes he doesn't. If he gets killed or kills himself I'd be terribly disappointed. I interpreted him checking the window as a nod to the intro and our long time "he gonna jump" obsession.
I loved Peggy's walk out of the building. And that she refused to move to Erickson until they stopped fricking around and lumping her in with the secretaries. So boss and if no one else ends up happy at least I know she is to some degree. I also found it to be an interesting juxtaposition to Joan, who tried to push her rights after the sexist shite McCann-Erickson pulled but her rep for sleeping her way up finally bit her in the arse. I've always appreciated Weiner's approach to women's social commentary in that period without beating you over the head with it.
Roger was golden as always. Loved Ted's reaction when Don got up and left. I've really enjoyed these last few episodes. I'm a lot less worried about a finale dud. Haha.

Diana was the Greek Goddess of the hunt. Some legends also say she was the the goddess of the realm of the dead and helped Persephone and Hades.
I noticed that the cafe that we first see Diana in is called the Olympic. Which is obviously a reference to Greece. So on some level there is a connection there, but it maybe just Don is on the hunt.
I do not think Weiner will totally kill of Don/Dick. He may go back to being Dick but I think Weiner likes the character too much to kill him off or have him been dead for a while. I also think mental illness would be a crappy ending. Maybe Don/Dick is a medium and can see dead people, I don't know how Weiner is going to explain that or if he will even try.
I also believe that Betty and Don/Dick will get back together. At this point I would like to see that. I think the hole in his soul that Don has been trying to fill the last several seasons is the hole left from losing Betty and his children and they are the only things that can fill that hole.

I guess in a sense Joan got what she deserved. The only reason she was made partner is sleeping with the customer. New boss figured she wasn't qualified. Don feeling old when guy in Miller presentation making pitch just like Don would have. Seems like last few episodes the way they are wrapping it up a little forced. Seems like many of these stories need to be finished over several more episodes but I guess that isn't going to happen.
Just finished tonight. This is the best post I've seen anywhere online.

Don is perennially unhappy and always looking for the next move to fill the holes in his life. I don't think he's going to die, but I believe he's preparing to move on from the life he cultivated in New York. Perhaps in California. Perhaps somewhere else. The people at the old SC/SCDP/SC&P/McCann now mean little to him (besides perhaps Peggy and maybe Roger) and his only real tie is Sally (doesn't seem to care much for the boys)). His intrusion on the Bauer family was pretty epic, and I don't know what the hitchhiker foreshadows.
McCann-Erickson's bareknuckles approach to taking SC apart piece by piece (figuratively and literally) is pretty epic. And Jim Hobart is a straight up ruthless mofo and a great character (that's a real, current firm by the way, like so many on the show). I felt for Joan briefly, but remembered that she was essentially a high-priced call girl and had already kicked way past her coverage anyway.
Great episode. The season isn't wrapping up as most of us would have expected/hoped, but it's stronger now than it was three weeks ago.

Nope Nope Nope Nope Nope
Do not want
As others have said, the boys are cool towards him. And why would Betty leave Henry? You might be right in that it is the void that he has tried to fill, but I don't see him filling it with them.
