My fiancee' and I just started watching Mad Men on Netflix and have gotten through a couple of episodes so far. It seems like an interesting show and I've heard a lot of good things about it. Matthew Weiner, the creator of the show, was one of the writers on my all-time favorite show, the Sopranos, and I think some of the other folks involved in the making of Mad Men were also involved with the Sopranos, so that factor drew me in as well.

So for y'all who have been following and watching Mad Men, what are your thoughts on the show?

Lol so despite the connections to the Sopranos, it's a very different kind of show I take it?

Jon Hamm was born to portray Draper.

You'll find fault with each character but the beauty of the show, shows the imperfections people have. You'll like some characters and dislike them only to like them again vice versa.

Slow burn but worth it.

Some people will hate it because "some episodes have nothing going". Keep up with the series and enjoy the ride. MM is all about character development/growth. You'll soon find yourself loving & hating specific characters as if you knew them personally.

Yes very different, instead of being about the mob it's about people in an office banging each other.

Takes a bit to really get rolling, but has some really incredible writing. Has one of the best episodes I've seen for TV in "The Suitcase".

Like others have said, it's a slow burn but it's worth it. If you're not reeled in by the end of Season 1 I'd move on.

It really isn't. It's a character driven series.

Definitely. And that's not an indictment of the viewer's taste or anything either. If you watch Season 1 and if by the time you get to the "The Wheel" you're not really blown away by the writing then I'd not waste my time from there on out.

I think this is fair. But I get tired of the posters who repeatedly say "I'm on episode ____ when does this show pick up?".

True. I don't really understand going into something like Mad Men with the expectation that it's going to have a lot of action or anything like that.

I find that hard to believe given your tastes in movies.

Yes it is soap opera-ish. But it is the greatest soap ever. And shot with feature film quality script, set, acting, camera work, and soundtrack.

I think you age has something to do with the show? Maybe. I am only 41 so was nowhere near alive at the time this show was set. But my parents were adolescent. And grandparents were in their primes.
