based off the boards recs, i binged Deadwood over the past month and curious to see everyone's thoughts.

for me, i really enjoyed the writing and the characters. Of course Ian McShane was unreal, but i also love Powers Booth and the guy who played EB and Wu.

with that said, i never really was dying to see the next episode. i felt like the series and stories never really went anywhere. yeah they had some rifts here and there and then the last season with Hearst, but i felt like it dragged a bit and found myself just watching it to watch it and finish it.

great show, fantastic cast, and i love the old west, just dont put it on my A list of shows, but im really glad i watched it. hated the way it ended.

whats the boards thoughts?

I loved the show. It always felt unfinished to me. Those cocksuckers robbed me.

I thoroughly enjoyed the series. And Al Swearengen just might be the greatest character/acting job in the history of tv/movies.

Swearengen is too 5 tv show character. You're right about the plot but it could have done something with another season or two to change that.

Good show. I enjoyed it. Totally ridiculous at times, but if your prick is gonna get sucked, I'd rather it be an over the top cocksucking compared to a boring one.

Few shows made me grovel in discomfort during grueling scenes more than Deadwood.

That fight between Dan and the Capt was epic. And I also loved all of Al's disertations while he was getting head.

It will get closure. The deadwood movie is in development as we speak.

Actor Garret Dillahunt, who played Francis Wolcott on the show, first leaked the news on Twitter.

Are they going to bring him back playing a third different character?

Great series, and the best cinematography in television history.

One of the rare shows as well where the first season is the best in the series, at least IMO. I thought the 3rd season was inconsistent, and the 2nd season was just okay. That first season was so damn good, and did an incredible job establishing the characters in a short amount of time.

The theater troupe was the only thing I disliked.

To me, dialog is what separates a great show from a good one. And Deadwood might have the best dialog I've ever seen in a show - fantastic from start to finish.

Great show, occasionally I'll rewatch the first season. My favorite scenes are when Bullock and Wild Bill are interacting.

The use of profanity is both excessive and genius and the same time.

I loved it.

I agree that the first season was the best and it went downhill, but it was still awesome start to finish though. I searched and found my original thread when I finished watched two years ago. Here were my thoughts the day after I finished:
quote:

I loved it...thought it was a really awesome series. The whole time I was watching it all I was thinking was how it was cancelled after only three seasons.

That being said, I was a little disappointed in a few things. First off, I was disappointed not only to see Hearst just straight up leave town, but also that no huge showdown ever happened. They were leading up to shite hitting the fan for at least half of season three, only for nothing to really happen at all. Another thing was Cy Tolliver and him randomly turning into an evil a-hole. I realize he was always sort of an a-hole (and people in his position have to be, like Swearengen), but toward the end he was violent and weirdly mean for no reason. I get that he was pissed to sort of not be in much of the loop anymore, but still, it was weird for me.

Also, with the whole situation with Doc talking to Alma about Sofia, and how he was doubting if her family was ever even murdered...where the hell did he get that from? Seems like that sort of manifested out of thin air as Doc was working on Hearst to remove the bullet after Trixie shot him. I didn't get that at all, and I even went back to watch his scene with Hearst again to see if I missed something.

I thought the whole show, from top to bottom, was REALLY well-acted. And I had heard so much about how awesome of a character Al Swearengen was, and he did not disappoint in the least. Ian McShane was BAD frickING arse as Al...one of the best TV characters of all time IMO.

I did have to watch the show with subtitles most of the time, because it is so difficult to follow what they were trying to say a lot of times...people talked so weird back in the day.

All in all, GREAT series, and I'd recommend it to anyone who hasn't seen it. I do think it would've benefitted greatly from even just one more season, but all in all, it's very solid television.

I do remember being upset that things just sort of petered out and ended, as opposed to all the ramping up they had been doing. But I guess that was more historically accurate...but it still bummed me out.

And I am super pumped that it is getting a movie.

The first two seasons rank with the best TV made.

The writers lost their minds as season 3 wound down and it ended horribly.

Timothy Olyphant was underutilized, he never really did much of anything and that was a waste. Kind of like Kung Fu but one where David Carradine never gets around to beating up the bad guys.
