i would have never watched this if it wasn't for MTVB...so,

if you have not seen it, do yourself a favor and buy it. uncut 5 hour epic off Amazon or elsewhere. do not read any reviews or spoilers, just let your virgin senses soak in the greatness. watch in one sitting, yes it is a commitment, but trust me and profit. your soul will thank you.

absolutely epic greatness. i want to watch it again...now.

that is all.

the german version of Band of Brothers

WW2. it's what all war/sub movies aspire to be. filmed in 1981, I believe.

I've read the book a few times and really liked it. But I've never watched the movie.

For those who have done both - how does the movie compare to the book in terms of quality?

It's pretty fricking awesome. I think the battle scenes with the depth charges are probably the most intense that I've ever seen. I was on edge for the entire night that it took me to watch it.

I watched this movie. Was it really 5 hours? Or did I see the 3 hour version if there is such a thing?

I think there a few versions. I think the one I watched that was on Netflix is like three and a half hours. I'm pretty sure it was originally a miniseries, and they made a theatrical cut.

It's a really good movie. I saw the 149 minute version in the theater when it came out and I've seen the 209 minute director's cut on one of the movie channels. Neither seemed that long. Haven't seen a five hour version.

The Museum of Science & Industry in Chicago has a U Boat. I was told they came & looked at it to help make the interior sets for the movie. You can go in it and see how cramped in they were.

There are a bunch of pictures of it in this article: U 505

Page on Museum of Science & Industry's website

ETA: I felt like the beginning of the Matthew McConaughey U 571 movie was ripped off from this movie when I saw U 571 in the theater.

I have the book and the movie... if you like the book you won't be disappointed. The movie is incredible.
