Ben was grounded but they showed so much of his other side. I loved the Ben character and identified with him and all his interests. But still has those elements of being over the top.
The craziest thing David Wallace ever did was go shoot hoops with Jim at a party. Sure he had that episode with Michael but he had gotten fired and was having a life crisis. My point is Office always had that one character that was straight out of everyday life that always pulled the show back into reality for me. I never got that with Parks. Mark briefly but then he was gone.

Parks was definitely wackier, which made the emotional moments more ineffective, IMO.
And David Wallace ended up being a crazy bastard . Are you forgetting the "Suck It" stuff? That wasn't just one episode. LINK
I do agree that Parks was wackier, but you can't say that the show didn't try to make us care about the characters by using friendships and love interests. There was so much "will they or won't they?" in that show. The love triangles were getting kind of crazy there for awhile. They were definitely trying to touch our emotions with the Ben and Leslie relationship: LINK

The Office was funnier to me, at least the first 5 seasons.

One of my favorites. All the characters are great, I love me some Donna too.

Ben had some great stuff, Cones of Dunshire, Ice Town, 1.5 second stop animation to REM Stand that he spent a week on, being the "cool guy" at the accounting firm, crying in a Batman costume during Treat Yo Self, being Chris' wing man so Chris could stay positive, the absolute inability to speak in public or when pressured. A nerd and a sap but genuine. Plus Tom played off of Ben very well.
Parks had strong characters but each with weaknesses. We all know someone like or think ourselves a portion of Ron, Andy, Ben, Chris, Tom, Larry. Plus it had strong female characters. The protagonist of the show was strong willed but needed help. Ron - the alpha male - was attracted to strong women.
IMO their wasn't a true strong female character in The Office. At times maybe, but overall they were caricatures. Pam was the worst IMO.

Anyone who says Parks never tried to get real or emotion, didn't really watch the show
They had some awesome moments like that.
