Here's why seinfeld will always be the greatest.

-It appeals to everybody watching TV. Whether you're male or female, age 15 or age 85, Seinfeld is funny and relatable (maybe not as relatable for the kids, but in general). How many other sitcoms can TRULY say that? I love lucy? Sit an 18 year old down to watch ILL and they'll complain in short order. Always sunny? No females are watching that show. Seinfeld has a MASSIVE range of appeal.
-The humor is timeless. The home dynamic isn't really close to what it was "way back when" so shows like ILL or the honeymooners aren't going to resonate with future generations. There's aspects of just about damn near every episode of seinfeld (once it hit its stride, so let's say from season 3 and onward through the end) that people can relate to in their own everyday lives.
-It's not low-brow. Shows like family guy or IAS are simply too vulgar to stand the test of time across a wide audience. Am I complaining or offended that there's bad language? Of course not, not at all. I'm just saying a show that would be considered the best of all time is probably not going to be one that is so overly crude. Heck seinfeld rarely even used cuss words.

While I enjoy both very much, I prefer Cheers.

They are different but even, Curb doesn't have the rewatch value as Seinfeld does.

All In The Family easily beats Seinfeld.

I'll say this about Seinfeld. It doesn't hold up for me.

A lot of sitcoms seem to get stuck in their own time and place and reflect certain jokes of the day.

Seinfeld doesn't seem to get old because they all seem to exist in this weird bubble - Seinfeld universe.

That said...what does come across with Seinfeld the more you watch it and the older you get is how insanely shallow and childish everyone is and really going nowhere with their lives...and talking and arguing about petty stuff can get tiresome the older you get.

I think the generational gap has finally started to hit the popularity of this show. It's definitely worth mentioning in the GOAT sitcoms, but there are a handful of comedy shows that are better fitting with this time period. It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia is at the top of that list.

I agree with realizing how shallow they are as you age, but definitely disagree with the last part. Like a fine wine I've come to appreciate many different nuances of seinfeld the older I get.

When I was in middle school and watching with my parents, Kramer was my favorite. He was the goofy slapstick character which obviously appealed to a youngster.

When I got to college I loved Jerry. His insanely sharp wit and voice of reason appealed to me and I heavily identified with him.

Now in my 30s and wiht a little bit of life under my belt I find myself thinking George is far more hilarious than I ever did when younger. His petty nature, cynical attitude...I see so much of George in people that I know and sometimes in myself as well.

On the contrary. Most sitcoms deal with wholly unrelatable or completely made up and contrived stories that are fun to watch but nothing to form a common bond with. The petty little talks they have in seinfeld are the exact same convos I have with all my friends. I feel like it resonates more with me now than it ever has.

Back in the m-'80s when Cosby (a show I din't like, FWIW) was at its height, there was an article (in TV Guide IIRC) about how hugely popular it was with every single demographic group: older adults, younger adults, children, white, black, male, female, urban, suburban, rich, middle class, working class, etc etc etc... Cosby was in the top 5 of every single one of those groups. We'll probably never see anything like that, with Cosby's enormous overall numbers, ever again.

Seinfeld was my favorite show of all time for a long time, but Curb Your Enthusiasm took over after the last season.

Your sitcom credibility is now zero. Unwatchable? It's on its 12th season. Seems there's a whole country and network that disagree with you.

I mean I love Seinfeld, but technology is quickly rendering many episodes unrelateable to audiences even young kids today

I said in a previous thread my parents gave me the boxed set for Christmas one year. The discs are all white with just a picture of each cast member on them. Years are in small text. I can pop any disc in and hit play with no worries. It's such a wonderful show.

Seinfeld (and The Dick Van Dyke Show, Barney Miller) were smart enough to pull the plug before they had a terrible season. Seinfeld went one step further by giving us a truly terrible series finale, showing us how badly the series was in danger of sucking.

Seinfeld is tops when it comes to cool comedy, but the original Andy Griffith show and Barney Miller are equals in overall quality.

I'm going to take Larry David's back and say that the finale gets way too much critique. It was humorous, played up the nostalgia by bringing back a ton of characters, and it ended with the same debate as the pilot. It's not a top episode for me, but I didn't think it was terrible by any means.

And going back to the argument for Curb over Seinfeld. I love Curb, but too many of the episodes have situations in which there should really just be one side to an argument. Either Larry or the other character getting mad at him is typically way off base with their argument. For me, it distracts from the humor quite a bit. George is my favorite Seinfeld character, but a whole show of George humor, which is what Curb is, can get tiresome.

It's still my favorite. I think it just hits on so many things that just about everyone can relate to.
