re: Is the Death Star the most significant weapon in movie history?

It could control the world and the minds of others. Invisibility was a minor point.
And when the Death Star was destroyed, Star Wars didn't end. Lord of the Rings is dependent on it.

The lightsaber is a more prominent weapon in the very franchise you're citing. Do some research before you start a thread bro.

The death star was easily the least cost effective weapon in movie history.
Especially considering you can take out a whole solar system just by filling its host star with cheap, overly abundant iron.

I hate to be this guy, but here we go. The death star traveled at light speed in the new installment. Unfortunately, that makes the time it took for the death star to clear the Yavin moon in episode IV completely ridiculous and make no sense. The death star just needs to be retired as a plot device. Its getting ridiculous.

Additionaly, the whole concept of the death star being a battle station is kinda ridiculous. They really just need the weapon part of it and the ability to move it around the galaxy at light speed. It appears to be operated by a handful of dudes in das punk helmets. Having all the other stuff on it:throne room, prisons, trash compactors, etc... is completely unnecessary.

Well, it's a gun that destroys entire planets. It's worth building and rebuilding and rebuilding again. I used to think it was tiresome to keep having movies about it too but really, it's realistic that the empire would keep at it and can you conceive of a more powerful weapon?

And, they won't let it go.
Hard to up the stakes much more than that.

It appears the emperor/vader regime of fear could not eliminate contractor scope creep as the death star ended up being a big arse swiss army knive when they really just wanted just a big arse gun.

Actually, they did want a battle station. The Death Star was intended as a deterrent as part of the Tarkin Doctrine. Basically fear of state retribution (i.e. your planet being destroyed) was supposed to keep everyone in check.

And they did have a few stripped down versions of the Death Star in the books. I could go on but I doubt anyone cares.

I will go with Liam Neeson's particular set of skills

what exactly did the one ring do?
I always wondered that. It seemed to be different for everyone.
My understanding is that the one ring gave power in proportion to the strength of the wearer; Frodo, a hobbit, was only able to enter into the world of the wraiths and turn invisible. Someone more powerful (Gandalf, per se) would have had immeasurable power and strength with it, and would have been corrupted by it.

So you are looking at different versions of the same idea and calling them the same, but all other catagories turning it to a "particular weapon."
Compare how prolifically nuclear weapons are used as a plot device and you realize this was a stupid thread.

But I never saw the Force do anything close to what the Death Star did
