Yes. T 1 was awesome but considering the big budget T2 had along with the groundbreaking CGI effects at the time, it's judgment day. Die Hard was another one that's pretty close.

If you consider superhero movies to be action movies than both Man of Steel and The Avengers were better than both and this is from someone who watches T2 to completion every time I click on it on tv.

T2 is great. So is die hard. I suppose if pressed I'd go with T2 though.

I'd put True Lies in the discussion.

And if not, what is? The original Die Hard is the only one even in the discussion IMO

Those 2 are up there. Cameron had not yet lost his mind. As others have said, arguably Aliens could be in this list, as could the original Terminator.

It would certainly be difficult for a "fifth" film to find traction against Die Hard, Aliens, Terminator and Terminator 2.

Other great films that "almost" get into this discussion, but don't quite make it because they are both more and less than action movies - Heat, Collateral, The Matrix, Bladerunner (my favorite film), The Fifth Element, perhaps Gladiator.

ETA: After reading the thread, I kind of agree with Raiders and The Avengers being mentioned. True Lies was borderline parody of the genre (but a good film).

Another I thought should be discussed is Top Gun.

Die Hard is the better action movie IMHO. That's not a knock on Terminator 2. Both films are easily in the Top 5 of their genre.

Die hard is the best pure-action movie but T2 took that and added ground-breaking special effects that still look good today, a classic villain, and a story with real pathos. I mean, you sympathize with a fricking robot for crying out loud.

OK...I'll take the hit and come out and say it. Action Jackson is surprisingly rewatchable. It has quite a few good lines and action scenes.
