Or just somewhat forgotten?
I'm guilty of going too long without watching one of his films, but I don't know that I have ever not liked him in any role. I am pretty sure he was a fricking genius.

If either, it's
Everyone that is familiar with Sellers knows that he's one of the GOAT comedic actors. What he did in Strangelove puts Eddie Murphy (who, pre ~1995ish, is fantastic in his own right) to shame.

Being There has grown into one of my all time favorites. I watch it about once a year, and periodically browse clips online. One of the greatest final scenes ever.
I think he's hugely underrated because he died at 54 and never got to do the "old actor deserves an Oscar" film. Secondly, the Pink Panther movies got the most post-mortem run on TV and they don't showcase his range like Being There or Strangelove. Speaking only for myself here, but I had just thought of him as the Pink Panther until I saw the other films later in life.

Forgotten to this generation of idiots who have no sense of history or culture...but no he is not forgotten to people that actually know what they are talking about. Sellers is probably the best comedic Actor there ever was. From Dr Strangelove to Pink Panther to Being There ...guy should've won 2 or 3 Oscars.

Very overlooked. Everyone remembers Dr Strangelove and Pink Panther but he was great in The Mouse That Roared and Lolita too.

Forgotten perhaps, but not underrated.

He is one of tGOAT comedic actors. My late grandfather, WWII vet at guadalcanal, loved Being There so much. He showed it to me when I was about 10 years old. He basically laughed through the whole movie. Peter Sellers was a brilliant talent. Great memory about that film and the Pink Panther, especially the fight scenes with Cato are among some of the funniest moments in motion picture history.

Yes
And also gets pegged as comedic actor which I get but doesn't do the man justice. Also a good writer.

I think it's "somewhat forgotten" - his stuff goes way back. In a lot of ways he and some others (Spike Milligan, Marty Feldman etc.) laid the groundwork for Monty Python with shows like A Show Called Fred, The Goon Show, and At Last, the 1948 show. The Monty Python actors and the TV show are fading from the popular culture (though Holy Grail is still well known). Sellers pre-dated them so it's somewhat to be expected.

his performance in Lolita is so creepily good it had my skin crawling the first time I saw it. Peter sellers is in no way underrated as he is considered an icon and pioneer of his craft

He's widely considered to be the greatest comedic actor of all-time.

Perhaps but how many actors are still widely remembered from that same time period? If you look at all the actors born in the same year as Sellers (1925), the only actor who's still well-known by the public is Paul Newman. It's hard for an actor to remain famous when it's been almost 40 years since he made his last movie.

Loved when he died at the beginning of Robocop

Yes. His abilities doing physical comedy were second to none. I am laughing now remembering his telephone repair man, getting himself stuck in the desk and turning it over. Later in the same movie, I think he delivers this gem. This is Sir Charles Panther, the famous Pink Litton.

My father introduced me to the movie around the same age. Impossible to fully appreciate it at that age.
And I'm ashamed to admit it, but I've never seen the Pink Panther. Will check it out later tonight after I'm done with Hudsucker Proxy (which I haven't seen in 5+ years, so underrated).
Also, his gag reel in Being There was incredible. Him cracking up while delivering the black thug's message was one of the funniest things I've ever seen.
