The evolution of Michael and Jim/Pam is fascinating though. Until I read this thread, I just thought Jim was a likable harmless slacker, a content underachiever like many people. Now my whole worldview is turned upside down.

bullshite. Have you ever talked to his friend Taddy Mason? He's a great guy. I'm friends with Taddy too. He calls me all the time.

Same here.

Dwight was the victim the whole time.

You could argue that sometimes, Dwight was a jerk to people in the office.

But Jim went way, way out of his way to frick with him.
The initiative he showed in messing with Dwight, he never even considered applying to his job.

I think what really bothered Jim is that Dwight truly applied himself, was the best employee at DM, lived life on his own terms, didn't care how popular he was, and was actually happy.

Can you imagine the psychological torture that took place in the Halpert household? I have a feeling his childhood would make a great horror movie.

Remember when they introduced his brothers? They had never met Pam and they tore her life apart about being an artist and a secretary as a "joke". It wasn't even funny. They just shredded her life. Then laughed about it in her face. And Jim had the gall to get angry. Considering the things he's done to Dwight and Andy who is he to get upset about that?

Remember when he bought his parents' house? This creepy arse picture was bolted to the wall outside of his childhood room:

He had to look at that thing everyday.

The point is Jim and both his brothers have deep psychological issues. I have a hard time believing the writers of the show didn't do that intentionally. They are true sociopaths. They have no problem just wrecking people's lives for no reason.

What must have been frustrating for Dwight was that he was the only one who saw through Jim's cool guy affectations.

It's been a while since I did a rewatch, but I don't think they made him an incompetent salesman as much as they showed how the business of sales changed since he was in the role. The techniques he used in the past didn't really work in the 2000s (such as the gift baskets)

It seems like a lot of people think of Jim as a "cool guy."

I don't think he is cool at all. Ryan and Roy are way cooler. At least Dwight has a farm and traps animals and shite. What does Jim do for fun?

Ryan is a total scumbag, not cool by any means. And Roy is just your average hometown blue collar baw, dime a dozen. Both are unnecessarily total dickheads to the women in their life. Ryan is a subversive pussy and Roy is a meathead that relies on physical violence/threats to intimidate

Dwight is probably the coolest guy in the office IMO. He owns a bunch of land and properties, knows how to provide for himself by farming and hunting, is a badass salesman. The only thing that drags him down is he cucks out a bit over Angela but still cooler than any of the other turds in that office. Jim is just an average grownup loser that tries to hide his own insecurities through pranks and trying to act "too cool".

Maybe creed, now that I think about it more

As the show wore on, the more I thought Jim was a total dbag who never got the arse kicking he needed. Roy should have kicked his arse, just needed to do it somewhere else.

I think the writers went overboard trying to make Michael look like an arse, when the "cool" kids Jim and Pam were actually pretty incompetent and toxic for the whole office.

I don't think people think Jim was actually a cool dude. He was just the guy in the show who was supposed to be the cool and laid back guy who doesn't try hard

Ryan? Ryan is a damn toolbag. Funny in the show, but still a tool

Guy was a manager, banged Jan, then got the girl of his dreams. Hard to call Michael pathetic.

Terrible manager, but not pathetic.
