Is Jaws the perfect movie?

When I was a kid growing up, part of a Friday night family ritual, my brother, sister and I got to go to the local stop-n-go and pick out a vhs to watch. Starting about age 5, every single Friday, I chose Jaws. I was fascinated by great white sharks. The act wore thin with my siblings, but I had a loaded bag of fricks and not one single frick to give away.
I think, yes, Jaws is a perfect movie. As I got older and appreciated "acting" more, the Quint Indianapolis speech put it into perspective for me of how great the scenes on the boat are.

As a rule I have a difficult time rewatching movies but Jaws is the exception. It's one of the few movies I can watch repeatedly.

The brilliant part of Jaws to me is how little they actually show the shark, but the movie is all about the shark. Spielberg puts on a clinic on how to build suspense.

Whats funny is that this was actually unintentional.
The shark was supposed to be filmed exponentially more but kept breaking down so Spielberg how to come up with a solution. Not showing the shark ended up being the best thing that could of happened to the movie.
Phenomenal movie.

Talk about your all time "falling into success" stories. If they showed a shite ton of the shark, the movie wouldn't be half as good.

Saw the movie in theater, loved it then, rewatched it a bunch, quoted it many times, most recently just a couple days ago in Boobs Magee thread, but...
Fake shark looks fake. Shark behavior is unrealistic in parts. Scuba tanks don't explode when shot.
OTOH, the human side, film structure, suspense, etc are perfect.
Conclusion: Needs Star Wars CGI treatment then full remake. (Just kidding, just kidding.)

Same thing with the original Alien. Seems like they don't really show the entire thing for much of the movie in order to build suspense. Granted, it's constantly growing and changing into it's final form, but the movie keeps it hidden for the most part.
I know that the shark appears in the movie even less than the Alien does, but the concepts are the same.

Spielberg couldn't show the shark nearly as much as he wanted, because it was so unreliable and fake-looking. He's said this constraint improved the movie by causing him to make it more of a suspense flick. So a little bit of luck was involved there.

I've read the book, and I am definitely of the opinion that the movie, for once, is better than the novel.
Spielberg got rid of some unnecessary plot items, and it made for a great film.

Did the book have a different title? I read a book around 6th-7th grade that was very similar to the Jaws story, it had a different title but I can't remember what it was

Jaws was based on a novel of the same name.
Benchley had another novel later on called White Shark, which I read as well. It was basically about a government creation gone wrong, and I didn't care for it that much.
Fun fact: Benchley played the part of a reporter in Jaws, commenting on the beach about the recent shark attacks.

Although I haven't read the book, I read somewhere that in the novel Brody's wife has an affair with Hooper. It this true? If so, then yeah, frick the book.
