Surprised it took two pages until Beverly Hillbillies.
Personal preference aside, you can make a case for Cheers. It was more relatable than Seinfeld, though not as many LOL moments. Certainly felt as big as Seinfeld during its heyday.

Definitely a toss-up with Seinfeld and Cheers, with MASH being next in line.

When Frazier was on, I really liked it. But i don't feel it holds up that well. Cheers feels like it could be on tv right now. It doesn't seem old at all.

No other show ever came close to having as many good side characters as Seinfeld. Seinfeld had Frank Costanza and Puddy. It wins every time and its not even close.

Best from the eighties but not the GOAT.

no mention of the simpsons in this thread? is it because it is animated?
Posted on 10/2/14 at 6:47 am to DownSouthDave
All in the Family. Period.
It was so good they moved it to Sunday nights to compete with Battlestar Galactica. It killed the show.

Cliff Klavin > Frank Costanza
It amazes me that the Simpsons have been on the air for so long. I just don't get the appeal.
All in the Family is great from what I've seen, but I haven't watched it from the beginning. But from what I've seen, Archie Bunker made that show, the surrounding cast wasn't as good.

Andy Griffith? You must have sentimental memories of Andy Griffith. It's a good show, but more feel good than anything
Well, it is "dated", no doubt. However, there is about a three year stretch when the writers hit their stride and the show was comedy gold. In its own subtle way, it occasionally was almost "edgy". Plus, the cast featured some terrific talent. I would have to place it among the top ten.

I think it is underrated because of its dated feel (heck, it felt dated in the early 70s reruns, TBH) and hokey setting/stories. However, you're right in that - it did flirt with being subversive (and that was clever because nobody was expecting it) and the acting, particularly Griffith and Knotts, was consistently pretty brilliant for what was, on the surface, another little throwaway rural sitcom.

Cheers was good, but sitcoms that were great from start to finish:
Barney Miller
Seinfeld
Bob Newhart
Wings is almost up there with Cheers. It beats Cheers with consistency, but Cheers had a couple of characters that were a notch above Wings.
