You can't really classify Basterds as a WW2 movie.

Why not?

BTW, I liked IB..it was much better than I was expecting it to be. That being said, I didn't think it was some awesome, brilliant movie. I thought it was a typical solid Tarantino flick. The worst part of IB was Brad Pitt in my opinion. He annoyed me and I just didn't think he did a very good job.

Also, FWIW, I love Tombstone. One of my favorite movies (top 15/20 likely). But I like that it's just a simple, straightforward western-set movie. No, it's not a typical "western," and sure some of the acting is pretty ridiculous (let's be honest, any acting done by Bill Paxton usually is). But it's a fun movie, and I don't think there's a single thing wrong with liking it (like some of you clearly think).

Tombstone (on this board at least) is constatly lauded over as this amazing piece of cinematic art with regards to the classic American Western

I don't know about all that...

it happens to be a complete pile of crap, and a downright terrible movie with medi-ocre acting, and a weak, weak script

I don't know about all that either.

I like Tombstone. I've always looked at it as somewhat of a caricature of what the west was. I never took it very seriously, so to that I end, without putting much stock into it being a "true" western, I really enjoy watching it. It's a super quotable movie for sure.

I stand behind that assertion

you'd have to go back in the way-way-back time machine, but as Cdawg can attest, there was a series of threads awhile back that went on about how Tombstone was the best western ever made. Some here could hardly type quick enough as they were taking turns gargling Val Kilmer's balls about his portrayal of Doc Holliday - which was so over-done, I could barely stomach his performance. "The Saint" may have actually been a better movie than Tombstone.

I thought Val Kilmer played an awesome Holliday.

It was over the top, but so were most of the characters in that movie.

Exactly. I agree that it's not great cinematic art....but it is definitely an entertaining film....if not only for the fact that it IS over the top.

I'm gonna sound like the guys uncle stu is obviously referring to but seriously...the very first time you watched that movie and Kilmer says...."I'm ya huckleberry".....tell me you didn't get chills.

I'm sorry that you were too stupid to understand it. Fortunately there are movies for you like "Transformers 2: Revenge of the Fallen" that appeal to the dumbest of audiences who go to movie just for explosions and comedy, and not a coherent plot.

can u read?? i didnt say anything abt not understanding it, i said it was boring.

Some friends of mine, not me, thought the Bear Jew should have been played by Will Ferrell. It could have been his first attempt at a more serious role than his previous movies, but it would have also been a very comedic scene with him coming out of the tunnel ready to beat some nazis. What do you guys think?

Idiots or Geniuses?
fwiw Tarintino wanted Adam Sandler to play The Bear Jew but he was doing Funny People and couldn't.

Not only that, but originally Landa's part was going to be played by Leo Dicaprio. He even read for it and started the process, but Tarantino realized that it would be better to use German actors in the German roles.

I wonder what it would have been like for Dicaprio to play Landa?

Not a drop off as far as acting but i can't see him doing the "that's a BINGO!" and "How fun!" those subtle comedic scenes.

Well I guess it's technically a WW2 movie but they didn't even try to make it accurate.

Basterds was brilliant. It was right up there with Pulp Fiction and Reservoir Dogs, making Quentin the only director other than Hitchcock with 3 films in my top 25.

Tombstone was a very entertaining movie. It has a good rewatchability factor and is one of the more quotable films around. Some great piece of cinema it is not. Then again, I don't think it was ever meant to be.

ETA: If any of you don't like my taste in movies, so the frick what?

Don't get me wrong, I liked the movie overall, but the last 15 minutes or so kinda sucked, IMO. I didn't understand why it was necessary for the girl to die, and I also didn't think it was realistic for that hardcore Nazi guy to suddenly decide to become a traitor, and then actually trust Brad Pitt to walk out into the middle of the woods with him and actually follow through with their plan. Those last few minutes turned a great movie into merely a good movie.
