Why do they not make sitcoms like Home Improvement, Step by Step, Family Matters, Boy Meets World, etc. anymore? Are the feel good, good moral comedies extinct? I think Futurama did an episode based on the same question. But everyone loved the safe environment and watchablity of these shows. Is reality TV that much cheaper to produce?

This.

Plus morality is a cess pool in today's world.

They basically exist in Modern Family and others. Tim Allen has one currently but I've never watched it.

It seems like most sit-coms are aimed toward 20-30 somethings. Ex:Ground Floor on tbs.

ETA: oh yeah, The Goldbergs and The Middle are today's examples as well.

Yes. Also shows like Modern Family have taken over TV. It's just the new way of doing comedy TV shows. The Office contributed heavily to the change.

Could you make the argument that the kids that grew up watching these shows that didn't have home training at least got some kind of moral compass by watching?

My kids watch You Tube shows more than they watch TV. They have no interest in sitcoms whatsoever.

Wat?

Modern Family
Parcs & Rec
Office (recently)
Big Bang Theory
Black-Ish

I'm sure there are others.

They are all good family sitcoms, but you are correct they don't hold the same format as the Family Matters/Step by Step/Home Imporvement because they adopted the Friends/Seinfeld format. Started by the Office, and adopted by the newer ones.

Why?

If you were starting an NFL franchise would you adopt the Cleveland Browns business model or the New England Patriots?

what ever happened to predictability? The milkman, the paperboy, and evening TV?

You may want to sit down for this, but the people who own the Full House house painted the thing Purple.

Futurama did an episode based on the same question.
Fry: But that's not why people watch TV. Clever things make people feel stupid, and unexpected things make them feel scared.

Lrrr: [on TV] : Attention, McNeal. Your unexpected marriage plan scares us. You stole our hearts as a single female lawyer, and so shall you remain -- or else!

Fry: You see? TV audiences don't want anything original. They wanna see the same thing they've seen a thousand times before.

Fry: Trust me on this. While other people were out living their lives, I wasted mine watching TV, because deep down I knew it might one day help me save the world. Plus, I would have lost my Workman's Comp if I had gone outside. Now just read these cue cards.

Fry: Yep. It was just a matter of knowing the secret of all TV shows: At the end of the episode, everything's always right back to normal.

Because today's youth aren't raised in families any more. They all come from single parent homes with baby mommas and baby daddies.

Another reason Futurama is one of the GOATs.

I love meta commentary. Probably why I like Community so much.

Yep. It's not even close. The 80's was the heyday of the sitcom.

They do, they just don't last very long. They had a funny one on ABC not too long ago called "Family Tools". It's was about a son taking over his father's handyman business after his father (the guy that does those farmer's university commercials) had a heart attack and was forced to retire. The show was actually really funny, but no one watched it. Ratings have shown that that format of a clean cut family sitcom just isn't that viable on TV.

The network that is actually putting out those kinds of shows is the Disney Channel. Their shows generally suck, but they definitely fit the mold of the OP with shows like "Girl Meets World", "Good Luck Charlie", "Dog With a Blog", ect.

Outside of the Disney Channel, the closest approximations to the "moral family sitcom" are probably "Duck Dynasty" and "Black-ish".

Eh... Like everything else, the format essentially ran it's course. It was replaced with more single camera shows like Arrested Development with less predictable humor. I personally don't find that a bad thing.

That being said, the closest thing to what you are asking for, I think, is The Goldgergs on ABC. That show is killing it, as it's kind of a mix of that old style family sitcom with more of today's pacing and humor. And yet, they wrap the thing up at the end of each episode in the same way those shows used to buty not in as cheesy and obvious a way.

I think that same band made all the theme songs to shows in the early 90's.

I agree with that. I love the Goldbergs. I can really identify with it as being the youngest son of an over-bearing Jewish mother and a father who just wanted to sit in his recliner at the end of the day and beat the traffic
