My what? Please explain my feelings to me, since obviously you have a better grasp on them than I do.

This is exactly analogous to Girls.

how many episodes of seinfeld were used to showcase why a character was the way it is? this season of girls has had TWO

girls is supposed to showcase "real" characters in a "slice of life" showcase, which is not what seinfeld did at all

quote:

You couldn't have a show at all without being somewhat sympathetic toward the characters,

seinfeld, it's always sunny, etc. all the "bad people" comedies are based in our inability to be sympathetic towards the characters and we laugh at the absurdly bad shite they do, because they're so terrible

girls, on the other hand, tries over and over again to make us feel bad for the characters to excuse their shitty actions

This is just flat-out wrong. You couldn't have a show at all without being somewhat sympathetic toward the characters, even if you know objectively they are rather bad people.

This is wrong.

Um, no, it's not. It's a comedy that offers "serious insights" into the life of a certain generational set of women.

when does girls come on? I don't think I've ever even heard of it until now, but based on SFP's breakdown of that article I'm not sure I'd like it. Sounds pretty shitty.

a. if it were a comedy it would be funny. outside of a chuckle about every other episode, it's not funny

if it's a comedy, it's an even worse show because it's not funny.

b. i'd estimate 85% of the show is set around dramatic moments and MAYBE 15% is comedic. if this show is a comedy, why do the dramatic scenes dominate the comic scenes?

Girls is definitely not a pure comedy. That's for sure. It's more drama than comedy to me. At best it's 50-50.

And they certainly do try to make us sympathetic to the characters. Not sure that can be argued. They wouldn't have these horrible episodes focusing on Hannah or the even worse hippie chick if they weren't going for sympathy.

Really? Being honest with yourself, you can say that you absolutely despise the characters on Seinfield and It's Always Sunny? You were really emotionally satisfied when they went to jail? How absurd.

Give me one show where the characters have become completely unsympathetic. Not "objectively bad". We all know that people in It's Always Sunny are horrible. But we still like them in their horribleness.

the whole point of the final was to make sure the audience understood this. over 8-9 years had forgotten how bad/fake these characters were, and the final joke was "holy shite you people actually thought these were supposed to be good people that you cheered for? cereal?"

I get that. Its a fair critique.

just saying girls has only had 17 episodes. if we go back and watch the first 17 of seinfeld, I wonder how we look at it.

to be clear, I dont think girls is as good as seinfeld even on its best day.

it is absolutely drama first, comedy second.

We're almost 2 seasons in, and only Shoshanna has gone anywhere so far, (Adam may be joining her).

All of the other main characters have spent 2 seasons spinning their wheels and are completely lacking in any awareness of how terrible they really are. I like the show, but its at least partly because I like watching these terrible people fail at things over and over without realizing its not the world, its them.

It is funny. And lots of other people think it's funny.

I would guess that same sort who don't like Woody Allen don't like Girls.

yes

i mean the characters on IASIF are legit pieces of shite that i'd never interact with in 100 years. they work in a shitty bar in the ghetto of philly. they're poor, 2 of them may be mentally retarded, and they do terrible things to each other.

seinfeld represents an archetype of "urban living" that i despise. i could hang out with them must easier than those in IASIP, but i'd be much more likely to want to punch seinfeld and co. in the face after a few hours. they're pretentious, they believe in a social code as if it's life's dogma, they're materialistic, they refuse to truly view themselves in a complicated way, and they're all pretty selfish the vast majority of the time.

why would i like either group? even the nice things those in the "seinfeld" group would do are invalidated b/c of their rote adherence to the social code they live by. they don't do nice things to be nice, they do it b/c it's expected

what do you like about dennis, mac, charlie, or frank?

Because he's wrong. And so are you.

When people watch Seinfield, do they say, "omg I hate George. I simply can't stand him." No, they say "I love x, y, z character". Yes, they know they are "bad" (and they aren't really that bad--part of the point of the show is that their narcissism is pretty pedestrian), but they like them anyway. I'm sorry you don't understand this basic fact.

Main reason I never watched Seinfeld was because of George. I HATE that guy. He does nothing but whine and complain and is so awkward, it was hard to watch.

The ONLY time I really even chuckled at him was the Birthday Party fire alarm.

Other than that, I couldn't stand watching him.

Yes, I understand I'm in the minority.
