Only problem with a comedic guy playing a serious role is everyone still sees them as the funny guy
it is even harder being the fat funny guy trying to be serious and people only see them as the fat funny guy. Look at Jonah Hill. Fat funny guy goes skinny and serious and gets belittled. Stays skinny and goes back funny, gets belittled cause he isnt the fat funny guy anymore. Now back to chubby funny guy.

Jonah Hill has gotten two Oscar nominations for dramatic roles.

Chris Farley would have never been able to carry on in show business without going into complete exile and intense rehabilitation for at least a few years.

An overdose is really the only thing that was inevitable for him, unfortunately. If he had survived, perhaps he could have settled down and eventually return to movies/TV in new roles, but it just isn't likely. Chris' self-loathing and anxiety only got stronger as he got older. He probably couldn't be determined to be anything other than the funny fat guy - which is all he thought people wanted from him.

The saddest part is Chris had so many projects lined up that he personally knew he wouldn't be around for.

Robin Williams did great at serious

A more apt comparison would be Adam Sandler, and I always thought he was great in Punch Drunk Love.

He was planning on it and would have been perfect for this part: Fatty Arbuckle

I'd love to see an Arbuckle bio. Throughout my life I assumed that the guy was dirty. Then I found out that the final jury apologized to him for his having to endure what he went through.

You might be right, but I doubt many folks originally thought Robin Williams could've pulled it off either, based on his prior body of work

Williams was so eccentric though and even early in the 80's you could see that he had range. Kind of like Jim Carrey. They were playing different roles whereas Farley was basically doing nothing but being the fat guy in buddy comedies. Even his great roles on SNL were similar characters. I'm not saying he couldn't have pulled it off but I don't think it would've happened.

I do think the good comedic actors are more talented than dramatic actors and are quite often overlooked come Oscar time. They just Battle a lot of stigma. If The Truman Show wasn't marketed as a wacky Jim Carrey comedy, it is probably better received and put up for awards.

i would say Moneyball MIGHT be dramatic, but Wolf is definitely not. In that move he was the chubby funny guy, IMO neither of which deserved nominations but he was very good in both.

If we're talking funny fat guys that deserved Oscar talk, it starts and ends with John Goodman in The Big Lebowski.

No but he would have been good as Shrek.

I wonder if we will ever get to hear the lines he put down for it.

We never got to see CF in a good screenplay and script like Planes Trains and Automobiles

I dont think he could have pulled off either roll. John Candy was a comedic oaf in a lot of the movie, but also pulled off the sad depressed guy towards the end.

Jim Carey was good in The Truman Show.

I think Farley could play a serious roll, but could not pull off the half and half.
