And he tried a serious role, what do you think he could have pulled off?

I'm thinking a crime Departed like role.

Some comedians can do it, some can't, what could he have made work?

Drama about a depressed man with low self esteem who tries to hide his sorrow by making everyone else laugh. He wouldn't have had to act very much.

He would've likely jumped the shark at some point and probably would be making Sandler movies

Robin Williams did great at serious

Some say comedy is actually the hardest to pull off

Yea I've read the same. Anyone can be serious, but not anyone can be funny. Only problem with a comedic guy playing a serious role is everyone still sees them as the funny guy

I recently heard an interview with Norm (I think) where he said Farley was seriously about to make the jump to dramatic acting if he had lived.

Apparently it was something that he had discussed with his friends and Norm said he absolutely had the talent to pull it off. A dude with that many demons would have been an incredible dramatic actor.

I predict he would've had a similar Robin Williams type career but probably take darker roles.

As a previous poster mentioned, if he had played some kind of semi-autobographic role about a depressed dark, comedian, he would've probably gotten an Oscar (or golden globe) nomination. Man do I miss that guy...

We never got to see CF in a good screenplay and script like Planes Trains and Automobiles

I would also have liked to see him as a crazy weirdo like The Cable Guy.

He was planning on it and would have been perfect for this part: Fatty Arbuckle

He was initially cast as that.

Sounds like Adam Sandler's role in Funny People verbatim

I'm a fan of Farley but he was kind of a one-trick pony. Robin Williams was extremely talented and had the range to pull off his serious roles without it being too forced.

I think John Candy would eventually grabbed an Oscar for a serious role. He had the chops to pull it off.

You might be right, but I doubt many folks originally thought Robin Williams could've pulled it off either, based on his prior body of work. I think the biggest issue wouldn't have been if he could've done a dramatic role, but if he'd been willing to put in the work off-camera....he would've had to flip the "off" switch and get down to business, which might've been more challenging for him than the actual role...

I honestly can't imagine anyone other than Jim Carrey for that. He was sooooooooo good.

He was planning to star in a biographical film about Fatty Arbuckle written by David Mamet before he died. It would have been fascinating to see how that would have turned out.

quote:

In 1997, Chris Farley began planning his first dramatic film, a biopic about silent film star Fatty Arbuckle, a heavyset actor who was falsely accused of manslaughter and rape in a highly-publicized trial before dying young of a heart attack. Farley met with playwright David Mamet, who agreed to write the movie. Farley’s manager Bernie Brillstein remembers meeting with Mamet in The Chris Farley Show:

“Chris came to the meeting at a little restaurant down in the Village, and he was the good Chris, the well-behaved Chris, because he couldn’t believe that David Mamet even wanted to meet him. Mamet loved him. It was a great meeting. He said yes before we got up from the table, and he wrote it for Chris. To this day, I know that it would have changed his career.”

Farley’s brother Tom remembers, “As soon as he heard little bits and pieces about Arbuckle’s life, he said, ‘This is me.’ It was the whole idea that nobody understands the real person underneath. ‘I’m going to tell them about the real Fatty Arbuckle, and maybe they’ll understand the real Chris Farley.'” The project got slowed down by Hollywood’s sluggish development process and, sadly, never came together before Chris Farley passed away
