I read The Dark Knight Returns and The Killing Joke (both are standalone Batman stories), and I thought The Killing Joke was way better.
It still left something desired though. Maybe that's the point of comics.

I don't know how good the Kindle app would be for comics, but I do recommend the Comixology app. Check out The Dark Knight Returns and The Court of Owls series.
ETA: Browsing at the library and comic shop is a good way to get an idea of what's out there.

The Long Halloween is the best Batman comic ever IMO.
The Killing Joke is a must.

Hush is a good start. You'll be introduced to a lot of characters and is a great story overall.

Court or Owls is probably my personal favorite, and is relatively new (from the New 52 comics). The Killing Joke is might be the biggest fan favorite. Knight Fall is a favorite of mine that stands because I vividly remember reading it as a teen.

There's some newer stuff out there written by Scott Snyder that is pretty fricking awesome involving Court of the Owls. Night of the Owls is great, but you should probably read Under the Red Hood before you get into those.

ive always loved grant morrisons run on batman as well. RIP is pretty damn amazing how he interweaves all of batmans history into one story.
also the partnership of dick grayson and damien wayne might be my favorite duo in comics.
