I don't steal. I just watch stuff that someone else stole.

Ah... modern day ethics. The mental gymnastics you must go through to rationalize the behavior.

Both are victim-less crimes, right?

Is viewing an illegal stream itself illegal?

I've done my own research on the topic and came to the conclusion that it is not, but I want someone smarter than me to explain why it is illegal. It seems to be the consensus opinion from people smarter than me that it's stealing and illegal.

Legal and ethical behavior do not always mean the same thing.

I agree. I was referencing your "stealing" comment.

What i don't understand is why so many apps require you to have a cable subscription in the first place, instead of just charging a fee for their app, or a monthly fee for it.
I'd gladly pay $7.99/month for the ESPN app.

You made the app for people that are cord cutting more than anything else.

Probably due to contracts with cable companies.

Cable and Satellite companies have the market monopolized with the power of the federal government backing them up.

Yes and no. From what I can interpolate based on what I've read to date, it appears the networks do want to allow people to cut the cord. They see the future and the money available to be able to sell directly to the consumer; however, cable/satellite companies won't release their tightly held grip on the current system and setup. They have been the brokers between the networks and the consumers, and they have dictated the flow of money.

This is why apple and (I forget the other company) are struggling to get their "pay for your choice of channels" service up and running. The cable/satellite machine has been fighting them and winning. Meanwhile we are the ones who continue to get fricked.

So yes these apps are available, but the contracts prevent us from accessing them without cable subscriptions. I believe SHO and HBO have been able to sell directly to the consumer, but that's due to them being premium services.

If it's anything over $10/month, i doubt many will be on board with it. Hell i can watch all ESPN and SECN with Sling tv for $25/month and have a bunch of other channels to go with it.

Some friends and I talked about that recently, about how hilarious and sad it is when people cancel cable and brag about the money they're saving when the flipside to that is that they are bumming login/passwords off of other people.

And for the record, I'm not saying it's a bad thing to borrow logins since the companies themselves don't seem to care...just that it's stupid for people to brag like they made this genius decision to save all this money when the end result is they are saving money because they are mooching off of someone else.

I'm saving roughly $90/month.
I'm not using anyones login for anything and i'm watching everything i normally watch, except my wife can't watch the Walking Dead, and I can't watch Pelicans games. They aren't worth $90/month to me.

Now if Hulu were to do this, that would suck and would cause me to have to by a OTA DVR to record shows instead of watching them on HULU. That's $200 for the box and $150 for the lifetime subscription.

This is false, they do care, and are looking at ways to stop this very thing.

Seems like this is often part of the "cut the cord" equation. Let's just pass around your friend's login info to all of us.
