To which one should I invest my time? I've never seen more than a couple episodes of each.

Never watched NYPD Blue
HSB will not seem as revolutionary as it did at the time, as its innovations -- ensemble cast and serial storyline (both taken from soaps, fwiw) -- are now commonplace in TV drama.

I’ve never seen NYPD Blue
Hill Street Blues was a solid show
I still watch it occasionally now

Season of NYPD Blue might be the best single season of network television.

NYPD blue is much better, I have watched that one 2 or 3 times.

I never liked HSB but loved NYPD especially after season 1 when Carousso left. Plus more boobies in NYPD

Hill Street can’t have aged well.
NYPD Blue was the best police drama for some time. Best ever. Until probably True Detective first season or The Wire came along.
NYPD has a few masterpiece episodes IMO.

I prefer NYPD. I'm always in some phase of a rewatch. I'll go a week or so catching episodes on Hulu, stop watching for a week, and then get back in. Just getting into the Russell/Liery undercover arc now.
Nothing against HSB. I think I appreciate the more contemporary nature of NYPD.

HSB, NYPD, Homicide Life on the Streets some of the best stuff ever made.

NYPD Blue by far. Fantastic show.

NYPD Blue is as fresh today as it was when it premiered.

Two different approaches to police dramas. Depends on what you enjoy. Both were very good shows.
HSB - more story lines per episode and more levity than NYPD Blue.
NYPD - more serious subjects, fewer story lines per episode.
I also thought that HSB was great for the first few years then the story lines were not as good in the latter years.
NYPD Blue had some excellent stories and I thought that the quality of the writing was good for it's entire run.

Neither. Homicide: Life On The Street and then The Wire.

Except for the “tune ups”. Those can’t possibly happen anymore. Every interview room has a camera.

Hill Street Blues, from the opening song to the final credits.
