According to TorrentFreak, a news site that covers piracy issues, HBO is targeting people suspected of illegally downloading Game of Thrones by sending notices to their internet provider.

The letter asks the provider to immediately inform the customer that they've behaved badly and need to stop.

The notice also encourages the provider "to inform the subscriber that HBO programming can easily be watched and streamed on many devices legally by adding HBO to the subscriber's television package."

According to the U.K.-based piracy monitoring firm, MUSO, this year's season opener was pirated an astonishingly high 91.74 million times around the world.

"It's a big number but it's a big show and there's high demand," says MUSO CEO Andy Chatterley.

The company based its data on internet traffic to more than 23,000 piracy sites. It found that in most of the cases — a whopping 84.9 per cent — pirates used unauthorized streaming to watch the episode.

The show has 11 episodes left and now they're declaring war?

People pirating contributed to the show's initial popularity and HBO knows it.

make people pay for it and it will be popular then fade away
give it away and it will live forever, and you can monetize it in other ways

They've always done this. My parents got a cease and desist sent from their cable provider back when I was in high school for downloading season 2 episodes off Pirate Bay. This was way before they offered HBO as a standalone service. Not sure if any cable companies ever actually took action, I just ignored the letter

I believe you get five "warnings" before the ISP has the option to cancel your account. Basically, the ISPs don't give a shite.

Always love the bullshite numbers they throw out. Guarantee most of those 23,000 sites use the same tracker so the number is nowhere near 90 million.

I got that letter. First and only time I've ever gotten a download notice from a company. I downloaded one episode about a year ago.

el oh el

I can watch it with HBO GO but this makes me want to pirate it. There's no way that figure is correct.

that's what I do. A few years ago HBO was actually happy people were sharing logins because they felt it was growing audiences.

"It's not that we're unmindful of it, it just has no impact on the business," HBO CEO Richard Plepler said. It is, in many ways, a "terrific marketing vehicle for the next generation of viewers," he said, noting that it could potentially lead to more subscribers in the future. "We're in the business of creating addicts," he said at a BuzzFeed Brews event in New York.
