Have any of you left Direct TV for some other alternative?

If so, what are you doing? Is it possible to replace Direct TV with some kind of combo of Roku, Netflix, etc?

TIA

I cut the cable a couple months back.

Kept netflix and watch stuff through Playstation Vue now. It's phenomenal.

ESPN for live sports is the only real sticking point.

Everything else is covered with Roku/Fire TV or stuff like that.

The only problem is that if you load up on too many subscription services, your bill could end up being right back in the cable or satellite ballpark anyway.

I use the DirecTV Now streaming service along with Netflix and Hulu. It's great.

ETA: Combining all of those doesn't even come close to my previous cable/satellite bills, but I would be paying for Netflix and Hulu anyway so it wouldn't matter even if it did.

First you need to ask yourself why do you want to leave DirecTV (or whatever service you're currently using). If it's for economic reasons then by all means become a cord cutter. There area number of devices and services that will allow you to pretty much watch anything you want anytime you want. However, expect to have an experience that is lesser in convenience and quality (at times).

It's like Sling, but it's a DirecTV product. It's marginally more expensive than Sling, but you get a lot more channels.

Roku or amazon fire tv is great.

It’s really nice if you know someone who maybe has say cox or another cable account username they can give you. Cox allows me to share legally with up to 8 people I think. I created my gf her own cable login so she can sign into that and use any streaming apps that accept it such as ESPN, fox sports go, Disney, etc..

There is something called sling tv you can pay for and get like WatchESPN I think and it’s a certain amount, but not needed if you have someone who can create you a cable login.

Netflix is okay but it sure seems as weak as ever outside of original content. Again though it would be worth it.

You can get a cheap antenna for your tv and that will cover your over the air local tv stations. Sometimes you don’t even need to buy the $15-20 antenna you can just try the coax cable from the tv to a piece of metal method.. then have your tv act as if its an antenna.

The last thing I would most recommend is getting Plex on your roku or fire stick/tv. If you know someone with a huge Plex library like me they can add you as a friend. You can also create your own Plex library if you have a pc. This takes all your movies or tv shows from your pc and makes them available to you via Plex in a very organized manner.. I have about 12k movies and shows on my Plex server that I can watch from on my tv or even the Plex app on my phone.

Lastly, some people may recommend getting Kodi. It’s not available on roku, but the fire stick or fire tv can be modified to have kodi installed. There’s more on that on the tech board thread of cutting cable I’m sure.

Good luck.

Got rid of DirecTV and now use Netflix, Hulu and illegal streaming through my Firestick. Also I use Reddit to stream any NCAA or NFL game that I want.

A guy from DirecTV called me just a few weeks ago to ask why I left and I said it cost too much and that my discount expired on my contract. And he's like oh well I can sign you back up for 2 years with free Sunday Ticket and your discount will apply for the length of your contract and not just one year. I told him I stream illegally online and I don't need to pay for cable. He says well streaming quality isn't as good as cable quality. I said you must not be using the right streams . I told him unless you could charge me $30 a month for what you're offering then we don't need to talk anymore. He told me to have a nice day. frick these cable companies. They deserve to die for charging exorbitant prices that they've gotten away with for far too long.

We're dropping Direct this week. Went out and got some rabbit ears to be able to watch the local channels and have Netflix and Prime.

you realize the companies have to pay the stations to broadcast right? When stations charge more so do the companies

Getting close to doing it. Our Direct antenna is in an exposed area and every few years the wind I guess knocks it out of alignment. We've had Direct for 15 years now and they've been out at least a handful of times to re-point the antenna. Last guy said the bolts attaching it to the roof are coming loose. All the ESPN and HBO HD channels are always the first to go. Pretty much the only channels I watch. So aggravating.

I have a WatchESPN login, and can get an HBO one easily.

I only have 3 TV's in the house, and have an Apple TV, a Chromecast and an Amazon Fire Stick already so it'd be an easy transition for the most part. Hardest will be teaching the wife how to use all of them. Kids already know how.

Netflix - $11.99
Direct Tv Now - $9.99

$20 for everything including free HBO. How can you possibly top it?

I mean I guess you need to factor in your high speed internet bill, but most would probably have that already.

Bundling is why I hate cable companies. Not having the ability to customize channel groupings. They have diff packages sure, but they aren't practical IMO. That's why companies like Sling are gaining ground because they don't include all of those bullshite fluff channels.
