Has all the new technology screwed up the way you watch TV now?

this probably isnt so applicable to the younger fricks in here who grew up with a rattle in one hand and a tablet in the other, but for you more refined older folk, like myself...

with the advent of on demand/Hulu/Netflix, Roku, etc, etc...I assume many are quickly becoming quite adept at streaming the majority of your favorite (or not so favorite) shows. Over time, I've found that overall, I watch way many more various TV shows now than I have since I was a kid, however, the number of TV shows I watch "live" is virtually 0.

Which is lately where I've noticed a disturbing trend. It's become so normal to have my laptop going, fricking around on this site, or some other, I effectively miss most of whatever show I'm supposedly watching. Constantly pausing, rewinding, or in many cases, I'll have to rewatch the same episode 2, sometimes 3 times, because I wasnt really paying attention. Lately, I save all my really favorite shows to watch on the treadmill at the gym, as I'm more likely not to be distracted.

This is not a good thing methinks

I binge shows now rather than watch week-to-week.

I made an exception with Westworld but that was only because the coworkers I eat lunch with all watched it so it gave us something to discuss.

How much I care about the show is a direct correlation to how much I'm playing on my phone/laptop during said show. GoT, my phone's probably not in the same room. Taboo, I'm surfing TD while it's on.

Eta...I watch most things I care about within a week of their airing.

I have often thought about this. When I was a kid/teen most of the time when I had the TV on it was background noise. Id put the TV on and read a book or talk on the phone.

But in the last several years with DVR usually if I sat down to watch something it was a show I wanted to watch and less noise. Now that I cut cable and stream everything I want to watch everything I watch.

But it also depends on how difficult the show I watch is to follow how many other things I can do.

For me, even growing up I rarely watched stuff live. I typically stayed up all night and would watch Nick at Nite (and later Toonami). My weekends were all about renting Beta Max tapes or VHS tapes.

When I grew up the only changes was that I watched way more sports and my late night tv was now Netflix and Hulu.

Kids changed my tv habits much more than technology. They have caused me to watch significantly less tv.

That sounds like a you problem

I don't touch my phone during a show I'm invested in. It's one of my huge pet peeves when watching with other people who claim they want to watch the show/movie then can't make it 5 minutes in without looking at their phone. They then proceed to ask what happened and I get furious

I won't watch anything live that has commercials. But yea I get what you're saying. Sometimes I have to make myself put the iPad down and pay more attention to what I'm trying to watch.

This is my problem as well.

Is there a 12 step program and meetings that will help me stop doing this.

I agree with this. Before the DVR/Netflix I didn't keep up with anything on TV regularly. I think LOST was the first one I started watching regularly and I didn't get into that until halfway through... but I was able to binge the first few seasons with Netflix discs then DVR the one that was current.

Now, the only thing I watch live is sports, unless it's just to have something on while I'm cooking... and my wife likes to put on HGTV while she's getting ready in the morning.

Last night as I was losing a game I was playing on my phone while watching TV (recorded, not live), I felt like TV was screwing up the way I used technology.

I catch myself doing this every now and then. When I do, I put the distractions away.

You are of course correct and beyond that it has contributed to a marked change in the dynamics of family structure. I grew up in the 50's and 60's and there was a time when our family actually gathered around the television to watch our favorite TV shows together. And even after we could afford a television, we still listened to radio shows like Uncle Remus.

I take this a step further. Once a week I spend 15-30 minutes scanning the coming week's program guide to add any single event broadcasts I want to add to my series recordings for the DVR. The rest of the week I go about playing on the web, doing the usual household stuff, etc.. When I get ready to watch TV I then check the list of stuff and skip ALL commercials.

Watching this way I have noticed the upward trend in longer commercial breaks, less actual program. A couple years ago 6 taps of the skip button was perfect to seamlessly watch the show. Now some shows are up to 12 taps, the standard is now 8. In another decade we'll have The Commercial Network, 24/7 commercials, zero programs.

There are very few shows that I get excited about enough to watch live. Homeland used to be one, but I've replaced that with Walking Dead. I usually watch:
Supergirl, Gold Rush, Bates Motel and Game of Thrones live. That's really about it. Sometimes The Flash.

ETA: Add Better Call Saul in there as well.

I'm 27, but I grew up with one of those big NASA satellite things in my backyard and gradually grew to Dish Network/DirecTV/Cable. Honestly, I don't watch a lot of TV outside of football. I'll turn on the news for background noise. The TV shows I do watch, it's convenient to have apps that will re-air old episodes in case I'm not home or busy when a new show airs.

Youtube is the real game changer. I feel that Youtube in a lot of ways makes DVR obsolete. Within hours of airing, major moments are up on Youtube for you to watch at your convenience.

I could go on and on about how to hold onto the attention span of millennials, who are so used to little shots of digital information simultaneously from multiple sources.....

I'm talking from a Gen X'er perspective

having a little Chromebook in my lap, all the while knowing, that whatever I've got on TV is instantly re-watchable, &/or available at my disposal, at any time, has somehow re-trained me to half-arse pay attention to everything, which is really nothing at all.

On one hand, I'm excited that I can "keep up" with so many new shows now, then somewhat disappointed on the other hand, that I realize I watched the same scene 3 times, because I wasnt paying attention the 1st time around.

True for me. They have to watch their cartoons, and my free time is already split between books and everything else. Wife and I get into one show at a time and watch when we can. I have a watchlist of movies that'll never get accomplished.

I can't keep up. And I tend to binge shows at the exclusion of others. Once I finish, I move on to the next.

That said, I love the technology. My kids are able to watch a kid's movie on the big screen, and I can stream the game on my tablet. Or I can wait for the wife to go to bed to watch the show she hates. The on demand nature of TV is pretty great.

It's overwhelming, and I do have a tendency to binge, but that is still SO much better than the old way to watch TV. I do miss the "water cooler" though.
