I am going to give a mention to Valkyrie.

Cruise was OK but thought the movie was really good

Yeah, but Bill Nighy owned that one as "I'm so scared I'm about to shite my pants" Albright.

No one mentioned A Few Good Men. While it didn't stretch his acting skills too strenuously, it's a role that no one else would have played half as well. He does young, smartass cockiness better than anyone, and he perfectly balanced Nicholson's old, bombastic harddass cockiness. Those two made that movie great.

Cruise has been in some incredible movies. Took this long to see a few good men. Only 1-2 mentions of magnolia and born on the Fourth of July. No one has mentioned collateral which he is great in. Might be creepy in real life but has been good in some great movies.

I wonder what the third act in Cruise's career will be.

Him and Tiger's career kinda parallel each other both were untouchable until a window into their personally lives was opened.

Despite the Scientology weirdness he still is good actor and my favorite role of his was Vincent in Collateral

Best Cruise performance... that's really tough to nail down. He's had a brilliant career.

agree with cdawg ... 'color of money' is hard to beat ...

he really is an under-rated actor ... when you think of great actors, he's usually not at the front ...

edit: completely forgot about 'interview with a vampire' ... the book's write wanted rutger hauer, which i understand, but cruise did a great job there ...

I have to admit that he does have a lot of really entertaining movies to his credit. Top Gun was huge for me at the time it came out and perfectly personified the 80's. Tropic Thunder, Color of Money, Jerry Maguire, A Few Good Men, etc. Only a few stinkers. But one of my all time Tom Cruise favorites not mentioned yet is

RISKY BUSINESS

"Porsche, there is no substitute."

That movie where he played a short white defensive back and was being recruited by famous D1 colleges...has to be one of the greatest acting jobs ever.

Tropic Thunder. Hated the movie, but it's his greatest acting job by far.

To each his own but he did not get enough screen time in that movie to be considered one of his best. The time he did get was hilarious though. He has been so good in so many movies but I liked his role in Jack Reacher. Collateral was great as well.
