Vanilla Sky...
Seriously though, Tropic Thunder and it's not even close.

Dirty Steve in the Outsiders.
I think Jerry Maguire honestly.

As kid of the 80s, it will probably always be Maverick. Just an awesome 80s movie with an awesome 80s somewhat over the top leading role.
My other favorites:
Les Grossman (Tropic Thunder)
Frank Mackey (Magnolia)
Vincent (Collateral)
Jerry Maguire

he should play someone that is completely unhinged and losing everything more often.

It's not his greatest, but to me, Edge of Tomorrow is the quintessential action flick. So surprisingly good and Cruise crushed that role.

One of the best action movies to come in out in quite a while.

I first saw this when I was ten and his performance still gets me as a 36 year old.

Strangely I got destroyed in the "who's got a better resume of movies top to bottom than Michael Caine" thread when I said I would put Cruise with just about anyone and that he should be in the discussion. He has 45 acting credits and literally 1 or 2 arguably bad movies in the bunch including some iconic roles and some fantastic movies.
