Apocalypto. Anyone who hasn't seen it is REALLY missing out!!!
Definitely in my top 5
I wonder if Mel Gibson's attachment to this movie is the reason why it doesn't get more accolades?
I would guess so.

I considered it good, but a step below Josey Wales and the Good, the Bad and the Ugly.
there is something about that particular movie that just stays with me. it has become the equivalent of a plastic bag in the wind, the most beautiful thing i have ever seen.

As American movies go, "Godfather I" vs "Godfather II" is a tough debate. I also think it's possible to view it as one film. This is obviously subject to everyone's opinion, but personally I don't think it's up for debate that the Godfather movies (minus the 3rd) are the greatest works of American cinema. They weren't topped before and haven't been since.
For international movies, it is hard to overcome the forces of nature that are "Cinema Paradiso" and "Il Postino". I'll admit an Italian film bias, and there certainly are some French films that are top quality works of art, but for the full package, those two Italian films are absolute heavyweights.
Also, some movies that receive a lot of attention but are rarely considered "greatest of all time" are American Film Noir classics. In the original Noir period (40s and 50s), there are few better movies than "Double Indemnity" and "Strangers on a Train". For the quasi-revival period (70s), "Chinatown" is an absolutely fantastic movie that deserves more credit than it receives. Would be on a top ten all-time list for me.

It has to be. I remember Robert Duvall saying it was the best movie he had seen in the last 25 years. That's pretty high praise from one of the best.

Tough for me to pick one:
Casablanca
Some Like it Hot
Patton
Godfather/Godfather II (impossible for me to separate)
Star Wars & Empire Strikes Back (If you push the issue - Empire)
Bladerunner (personal favorite - has to make this list - plus, Ridley)
Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan
Goodfellas
Pulp Fiction
Shawshank
Impossible to pull one out of that group - if forced, I guess I say Casablanca, but I'll be damned if I know why.
this pretty much sums it up for me

Hard to have a single greatest movie of all time, as there are a handful that could be argued for best and folks would likely change their minds on them over time. I think about 10 could fall in that category though, and most have been posted here already. A couple more for thought..
