Well yeah.

But he has a higher quantity of great performances. Like Barry Sanders. So that's a place to start.

* ANd I hope you realize that my passion for that topic, and reaction has nothing to do with you.

Of course. I'm pretty sure we've had this convo before.

The problem isn't in determining a movie's greatness post production, that would be easy. What we need is a formula to make a great movie.

And we would use elements from previous great movies to determine the variables.

It's not my favorite movie, and certainly not the best, but I can watch Where Eagles Dare all day long.

A lot of good picks in the thread...

Mine:

Ben Hur

Here are the movies that have moved the most in my top 10 in the last 45 years:
Casablanca up 2 to 2
High Noon went up 1 when I dropped Birth of a Nation down, then moved down 1 to 3
Seven Samurai up 2 to 6
Searchers up 3 to 10

Birth of a Nation dropped 12 from 2 to 14, mainly there because of the length and scope of the first of what should be called a real movie instate the 1-2 reelers before it.

I have made list of my top 10/100 since the late 60's.

Apocalypto is a good movie, it is based on a better movie The Naked Prey.

The tell is based on the true account of trapper named John Colter being pursued by Blackfoot Indians in Wyoming.

When they filmed The Naked Prey they did not have the money to film it in the US, so moved the tell to Africa.

Conrel Wilde does a very good job in the lead role "man", with father and son Gumpu playing well as the tribal Chief and Warrior leader son.

Gert van den Bergh played man 2, was in the movie Zulu.

Good points here. The key then I guess would be, identifying the measuring stick(s). I think if you start with an intelligent, open-minded and articulate group of people (in itself a subjective and tough thing to vet) then you have the basis of being able to cumulatively agreeing up some standards by which "great films" should be defined.

Tossing out the obvious jokers posting Good Burger and such, it's a interesting to see the diversity in what people believe is the best movie if all time.

I've never been a fan of the Godfather movies, but I am a fan of some of the older flicks where a story was told vs Hollywood just trying to entertain an audience for a few hours..

I watched the first half of Ben Hur on Sunday and will probably watch the 2nd half later this week..

..other movies that I believe are up there:

Moses (10 Commandments)
Shawshank
TGTB&TU
Star Wars, Ep 5: Empire Strikes Back
The Great Escape
Kelly's Heroes
