refresh my memory which of the maesters described that? The old Targaryen on the wall?

Maester Luwin, Maester of Winterfell and trusted advisor to House Stark. Killed during the Sack of Winterfell by men of House Bolton. One of the few maesters to have studied magic.
He talked about his Valyrian steel link with Bran, in season one I believe.
ETA: I called them the "black Arts". Maeser Luwin was in no way dealling with "Black Arts", but he did study magic.

Not necessarily the black arts. But they study magic. Maester Luwin had a valyrian link

But oh well if it bothers people ill abstain
Doesn't bother me, but I think the discussion can go down the path of discussing things about Shireen, Selyse, Dragonstone that haven't been shown yet. Not a big deal.

Right. I called them the "Black Arts" when it is clearly magic......Maester Luwin clearly would not study "Black" magic.......Qyburn, OTOH...

They didn't show the dragonstone arrowheads?

Nope, and I doubt he has any significance in the grand scheme of things.
So you're saying I won't be collecting on my 100,000 to 1 bet that Patchface is the one sitting on the iron throne at the end of the series?
Disclaimer for Nonreaders: that's purely a joke and in no way foreshadows any future events in the book or show.

Master Luwin (Winterfell's maester) is the only one on the top of my head I can think of. They tend to try and bully and intimidate other Maesters who try and earn the Valyrian Steal chain.

Damn nerds. I bet they read more than the other maesters do as well.

I don't seem to recall anything on TV about the comet_________________________________________
The first couple episodes of Season 2 showed the Red Comet, and it was discussed on a couple occasions.
The comet is also represented in the opening credit sequence by the flaming ball that is the Game of Thrones logo right??
As they're moving from Westeros over the Narrow Sea the comet is in the air, and then they go back to it and it is the flaming logo.
Am I just imagining that?

I thought this at first but the comet they show and describe is blood red, that flaming ball is just a ball of fire IMO after seeing the comet in every transition scene in season 2 episode 1

In a kind of reverse use of this thread, I have a question from a reader (me) to the non readers (don't worry, there is nothing in the question other than things explicitly shown in the show to date. No spoilers):
What did you guys think of the Dondarion being resurrected scene? It kind of came off as not that exciting to me, even though you could see they were trying to make it exciting with Arya and the Hound doing double takes. But then of course I knew it was coming. I was wondering how it appeared to non readers.

i guess at the time, i didn't know he was dead, i thought he just got cut in the shoulder really badly. so my WTF moment was the campfire scene with him and thoros going over his resurrection history.

The scene lost some of the excitement because it happened off-screen. It would've been more interesting if while Thoros(?) was speaking the resurrection words that Dondarion suddenly took a big gasp of air and came to.
I thought it was pretty cool because it gave the Followers of the Lord of Light a helluva boost in "steet cred" and I find every introduction of some sort of magic pretty cool/interesting... Just lost some punch by occurring off camera.
