I feel like they've put a ton into advertising. What did everything cost all together?

This movie will probably break even when it's all said and done. Sjw outcry might even get it a sequel.

Deadline has it at 16.9 gross Friday with projections at 44.5 million for the weekend.

They also say $144 million after rebates to make the film and then $100 million global P&A. So $254 million is right.

I would be willing to bet a lot of money that it gets a sequel. I would be surprised if it didn't.

I consider myself feminist but you couldn't pay me to go see it at this point. Manufactured make it female just to make it female roles does more to hurt the possibility of original content with female leads than anything. Especially if it's poorly written.

It's going to do well enough because it's a major franchise sequel and people will go out of sheer curiosity.

I don't understand how the production budget was $144 million. But then again I haven't seen it, but that is a ton of money for a comedy.

You'll probably be as close as people that predicted 20 million.

In other words, you were wrong.

17*3=51

Saturday will need to have a huge jump up for it to be near $60m.

W/the theater average at about $4.3 k I don't see a huge spike that pushes it up the $60m/ The box office media still has it's estimates at about $46m t0 $50m.

quote:

Friday estimates have come in and Ghostbusters is right on track to match Mojo's expectations with an estimated $17.2 million Friday, pushing toward a weekend right around $46 million. While these aren't exactly blockbuster numbers given the film's $144 million production budget, they aren't exactly dire numbers either as director Paul Feig's films tend to deliver solid multipliers. In fact, the film's "B+" CinemaScore matches the CinemaScore for both Spy and Bridesmaids and is just below The Heat's "A-" and all three enjoyed solid legs. Ghostbusters is looking to deliver Feig's largest opening of all-time and the same goes for star Melissa McCarthy.

quote:

Ghostbusters topped the box office chart on Friday with $17.2 million. This is the best opening day for the director, Paul Feig, topping his previous champ, The Heat by 25%. If this film has the same internal multiplier as The Heat, then it will earn $49 million over the weekend. This seems a little high, but not out of the question. Ghostbusters’ reviews are better than The Heat’s reviews were, although both films earned B+ from CinemaScore surveys. On the other hand, Ghostbusters is a remake, so that tends to make the movie more front-loaded. Look for an opening weekend of $45 million. This is right on the edge between financial success and failure. The film will need help internationally in order to break even, but it is way too soon to know if that will happen.

One thing I think some have missed that will take a big bite out of the international haul is this movie won't get released in China b/c it's breaks their censorship rules and due to the original two never coming to China in the first place.

quote:

But the world's most populous nation — and No. 2 film market — won't be joining the fun anytime soon. The Sony tentpole has been denied a release in China, sources close to the decision-making process in Beijing tell The Hollywood Reporter.

China's official censorship guidelines technically prohibit movies that "promote cults or superstition" — a holdover from the Communist Party's secular ideology — and the country's regulators occasionally have been known to use this obscure provision as rationale for banning films that feature ghosts or supernatural beings in a semi-realistic way (Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest suffered such a fate in 2006, thanks to its depictions of ghouls and cannibalism).

quote:

The original Bill Murray-starring 1984 classic, which never screened theatrically in China, was translated as "?????," five characters literally meaning "Ghost Catcher Dare Die Team." The sequels followed suit. The reboot, however, has been reworked as "?????," meaning "Super Power Dare Die Team."

Many guessed that Sony made the adjustment in hopes of finessing the film into China's strictly regulative but increasingly lucrative theatrical market.

quote:

"It's been confirmed that Ghostbusters won't be coming to China, because they think it's not really that attractive to Chinese audiences," says one Chinese executive. "Most of the Chinese audience didn't see the first and second movies, so they don't think there's much market for it here."

Sony isn't commenting, but a Hollywood source with knowledge of the situation says the film hasn't been officially submitted for approval by Chinese regulators.

I'm not so sure. It cost 150 million to make, so that's not much of a return. Also, it might make 45-50 this weekend, but I expect this movie to fall off quickly. It was a pretty bad film.

I had in my mind 56 million for the weekend.. It will depend on the oversees to see whether this thing breaks even or could even be a hit.. I will say, I'm shocked my kids don't want to see or at the least haven't expressed any open desire to see it.. I'd probably cave in after the 2nd weekend but I'm in the clear as of now.. It probably wouldn't be close to the worst movie I've been dragged to but with all the BS surrounding this film, I don't want to.

Kind of sucks that the remake of a great franchise *may* get a sequel due to external factors. You'd like to think it would be pretty hard to not make your money back on such a universally known brand as Ghostbusters. That's why it was so stupid to do it the way they did.

If this movie had been made with the original cast in their original roles passing off the Ghostbusters torch to a new crew, instead of pretending the original didn't exist and turning it into a slapstick carnival attraction, this movie would have easily made $80 opening weekend.
