Hoosiers is just such a good movie.
Regardless of sports. It's almost a perfect movie. It does everything you want in a movie, transport you to that time and place and not be hokey or false.

The Longest Yard starring Burt Reynolds, not that abomination with Adam Sandler and the cheeseburgers.

This would be my pick. It perfectly captures minor league sports in a small town.

One of the first movies I ever got choked up on was a sports movie: Brian's Song. (Filmed in the 70s; saw it in the 80s)
More recently, I'd say Friday Night Lights. It felt real to me. They didn't go for the typical Hollywood Happy Ending. Very bittersweet. I also liked that the movie introduced me to the Texan post-rock band that did the somber, haunting score, Explosions in the Sky.
