That also would have made it better to have him using Graves, under like the Imperius Curse or something.
I just feel like a great actor was wasted in that reveal. I really would have loved to see Graves as the right hand man who was creating chaos in America under Grindelwald's command to open up the war. Would have given Newt a great villain to fight on the American front while Dumbledore is battling Grindelwald in the European front.

I saw this movie last night and it was a huge piece of shite

Care to give an explanation? I thought the movie was plenty enjoyable, with deficiencies that we've been discussing.

IMAX or regular?
Which should I see?
Which should I see?

I saw it today on IMAX. I thought it was great and I'm not into Harry Potter.
I thought it was a better movie overall than any of the Harry Potter's I've seen.

If you want more of Queenie, she's the lead singer of A Fine Frenzy. Pretty darn good voice.
As for the movie, I thoroughly enjoyed it. Good acting. Good score. The animals were interesting and fun and I'm glad they played a big part. The story was okay. I'm with the few posters who wish we had a little more background into Grindlewald especially since he turned out to be our main antagonist. Why was he in the US? Specifically for the child? Where was the Elder Wand? How did he rise so high in the American polical ranks? Was he there for years or did he assume Graves' identity? Lots of questions there that I doubt we truly get in the coming films.

Yes. He was hunting Obscurials, and saw that one, but the vision wasn't clear. He wanted to harness that Obscurial power.

My biggest question

I went with he took Grave's identity, but used another spell instead of polyjuice.

wife and kids did a massive marathon of getting them up to date on HP to take them this last weekend.
we all enjoyed it. i actually liked it more than the HPs. i felt like the kids gloves came off and made for a cooler movie. where they used magic like i would in everyday life.
sometimes i would watch HP and be like, why don't you people just disapparate? why don't you just use this spell? obviously the storyline from the first 8 movies was about kids learning spells and being novices.
that all being said, it had a fair share of flaws and goofy moments. i'm excited to see the world expand.

I thought the movie over all was pretty meh. Same big complaints many had with Graces/Grindelwald.
Minor complaint I had was Newt's case. If it was ever even partially opened, things got out. But many times in the movie he would leave it completely open for a long period of time when trying to catch one of his beasts.
Which leads into a much bigger complain: The magic in the HP Universe is waaaaay too convenient for the characters. There were a lot of "pow pow" moments with wands. Then with simple flicks of the wrist, entire cities can be fully restored. No problem. All better. And the "we can't erase an entire city" "WAIT I HAVE SOMETHING JUST FOR THAT." There is never a drain on people from using magic like most other universes do. And the easy fixes make lasting effects non-existent. It really removes the drama out of the story for me.

I've heard in recaps that it was mentioned that Graves had just spent time in Europe. Clearly, Grindelwald got him and took his identity and came to America as Graves. It's not clear if Grindelwald was using polyjuice or something else.

I'm curious on that as well. That would be the simplest route, but curious I don't think he was ever shown drinking anything. Maybe, he had perfected human transfiguration

It's clear that he is very powerful. I know that Dumbledore was able to make himself invisible without a cloak.

I thought it was a good movie overall. A few things bothered/annoyed me but none are that major. Here are my thoughts on some things.
1. I don't like the convenience of the magic. This is somewhat true in the HP movies too, the characters are able to do whatever they want when it suits them (i.e. rebuild NYC in minutes, erase everyone's memory with an unproven elixir, read minds at the drop of a hat, etc). These are things that are shown in the books to be at least moderately difficult, if not extremely difficult. I think that's a symptom of this being written for a studio audience instead of in a book where things can be better hashed out. I don't love that part, but I can get over it.
2. Newt's story is essentially a side story. The whole premise of him collecting the beasts is ultimately irrelevant by the end of the movie. Sure, this movie was just a set up to a long series, but as the one that kicks it all off, I wish the main story was more relevant to the movie.
3. For those asking about the Elder Wand, I think a likely scenario is that Grindlewald already has the wand, but wasn't using it while in New York. He's clearly not too upset about being captured, he never really did anything requiring advanced magic. His whole goal of being in NYC was to find the obscurus and (probably) get out of dodge. It's very possible that he decided it wasn't worth the risk of using the Elder wand in this situation, and he just left it at home/used a spare to be safe.
4. I think it is possible, if not probable, that Newt is the person that gave Aragog to Hagrid. We're 12 years from the time Tom Riddle and Hagrid start at Hogwarts, so I don't know if it will be worked into this series directly or not, but it fits pretty well if true.
5. I think the wizards in America didn't seem to be overly concerned/knowledgeable about Grindlewald because he hadn't been active in the US up to this time. Even in the HP series, Grindlewald's rise/fall is pretty clouded, and it seems that he did most of workings in Eastern Europe, so it makes sense that wizards in the US wouldn't be overly concerned about him at this point.
Anyway, those are my quick thoughts/points. I may come back with some more, maybe not. I liked the movie overall. I'm glad they are reviving the HP universe, and while I know these will not live up to the original series (would be almost impossible IMO), I'm excited to see where the series is headed.

I thought I was the only one. Movie was terrible besides for the few parts that was humorous. I was ready to leave 20 minutes in.

Why do you think it was terrible? Were you confused? Did you not know you were watching a fantasy film? Did you watch/like Harry Potter?

Then the wand would be Goldstein's now. We saw that when Harry stole Malfoy's wand, it transferred to Harry even though Malloy didn't have it.
