I think it's cool if he doesn't like GoT. That's his opinion. Maybe he just doesn't enjoy the story or connect with the characters. I don't think people need a long, elaborated reason why they don't like something. If they don't, they don't like it. They just don't connect with it for whatever reason or another.

So why don't you like Game of Thrones?

So the joke around the house is that Game of Thrones should just be called "Bag of Dicks: The Show" It just seems like every single motivation in the show is who can screw over one another with nary a thought for logic, reason, or even happiness (outside of maybe one or two characters). The show is about who can be the biggest bag of dicks at any one moment in time.

It has, at least through season 3, so few redeeming characters and such a pessimistic view of both itself and its characters, I just feel unhappy watching it and not surprised by anything because any plot point is bound to the "bag of dicks" rule: Whatever is happening or will happen will be the result of someone being a giant bag of dicks.

And there's a big difference between a show steeped in depression that works (see The Killing Seasons 1 and 2) and one that doesn't, Game of Thrones through season 3. IMO.

In terms of the books, I find Martin's writing style laborious and boring. It felt like work when I read it. There's no color or punch unless two siblings are going at it. If you're going to be detailed, you have to do it well, see someone like Tolkien or Simmons.

Incorrect. I like to know why I, don't like something. Especially when I should. Other people's opinions aren't really going to effect that.

All valid reasons. The next question is, do you discredit people who do like the show, or do you understand that people just enjoy different things sometimes and that's OK?

In certain cases, yes.

Although in terms of something like Breaking Bad, it makes sense. I can see why people like it. I straddle the Lost line, but that one makes sense too.

Game of Thrones is a mystery to me because of what it is. It's a fantasy property. That was classically, and still to this day outside of Potter and GoT, been nerd territory. The public fervor over GoT is confusing especially because it's so damn dour.

Most times yes. And in GoT's case it's a hesitant yes. See above.

Gotcha. I like to use critical thinking when judging movies, TV, etc as well.

Fair enough. I cringe when I here that people actually like the Grown Ups movies.

To me, comedy is a different beast when it comes to taste. Comedy is so specific, so nuanced based on what you specifically find funny, that it's hard to understand sometimes. The amount of people that didn't like Arrested Development is kind of mind boggling, until you understand really how specific in approach that show is.

On the other hand, what happens around here when Big Bang Theory comes up? Granted it's a simple show, simple premise, few risky laughs, but some people just like the show. It's hard to find fault in that when comedy is just different.

The other problem are statements. There's a difference between "liking" something, and understanding what that means, and saying something is "great."

People confuse that a lot, even around here. I'd never fault someone for saying Crash (2006) is a film they really enjoy. I don't understand it, but that's fine. However, to say it's a great film, or even one deserving of something as nebulous as an Oscar, is a stretch and something I'd argue against. Probably aggressively. No matter what anyone says, that isn't a "good" or "great" movie. Period.

There's a difference between a "great" movie TO me, and a "great" movie.

Nah. I like what I like, and nobody can make me like it by telling me to.

My example is Seinfeld. I've tried to watch several episodes, and it just doesn't click for me. I find it pretentious and stupid. Yet pretty much everybody I know universally loves it.

I won't say it sucks, but I certainly don't like it. Maybe one day I'll come around on it, but I doubt it.

Not to mention that there is so much penis on the show that it sometimes seems like they just spill a literal bag of dicks all over the place.

I do love the show though, dicks aside.

Nope.

People swear by Scarface. I didn't like it. Couldn't get into it.

I like the series overall. But the last two seasons weren't that great IMO. Entertaining at times, but too over the top for my tastes. Every main character turned into a ridiculous, unlikeable caricature. So if someone's first impression of Seinfeld were the late seasons I could definitely see how it could turn some people off.

I might have a Breaking Bad turnaround on it this summer, you never know.

Just curious, did you grow in a rural area? That's been my only experience with people who didn't enjoy Seinfeld.

Would you give an example your kind of comedy?

It's certainly very popular, but not universally loved. I didn't like it either.
