Just stupid mindless comedy. Not even a perfect production. Sometimes the color timing is just a little off or the directing is sloppy because it’s just a goofy stupid movie?

Movies like Saving Silverman, Anchorman, Bad Santa, Role Models, 40 year old virgin, American Pie, EuroTrip, Tommy Boy, Happy Gilmore, etc etc

Are there even comedian led movies anymore? Why do all the young comedians in movie and TV suck so much right now?

Get off my lawn. Comedy was better when I was a kid.

Cancel Culture + the Apatow era have created a lull.

What's going to happen is that within a few years, someone will make a cheap comedy that hits the Zeitgeist and prints money and it will usher in a new era. Think neo-American Pie.

Comedy is like horror, where low budgets can pay big rewards. Both have moved into more elevated (and expensive) forms. In today's market? That's a no go.

I imagine when the impending recession comes, you're going to see a boom in silly comedies, especially when we're coming out of it

*ETA: I edited dates b/c I used the wrong one on accident

I hope so. I hope stupid comedies and low budget action movies make a huge comeback.

Along with real music.

Social Media has made us want everything to be polished and professionally edited. Everything from the media we consume to our family photos. It’s all fake. We’re missing the raw reality that is life. We’ve buried it.

We lost the ability to just be real. That’s where real art comes from. Comedy is no different.

Meh. Even those you mention (and I like most of them) can't hold a candle to the really great comedies - movies like Airplane and Princess Bride and series like Fawlty Towers which is the GOAT for me.

No. That’s why I watch Seinfeld and cheers. What they say in these 2 series would never make it on tv today. And, I’m not talking language.

The collapse of the dvd market really made a big impact in that genre. Those movies you listed all could have flopped in theatres but killed it in DVD sales. Nowadays production companies don’t want the risk and have made movies that are safe and boring imo.

With all the streaming options you would think there is a market for this but I can't really think of any. Weird the Al Yankovic movie was possibly the funniest thing I watched this year. I also liked Confess, Fletch but it's not the Chevy Chase movies so most didn't watch it.

It's not just movies. Pretty much all forms of comedy have been killed off. Sitcoms, Late Night talk shows, stand-up specials. They are all dead or dying.

Comedians these days are either too woke to be funny or afraid they’ll be canceled for making good jokes.

In his latest release, comic Sebastian touched on the practice of skirting the edges of comedy in the world of cancelling. “Deal with it …”

The Wrong Missy and Hubie Halloween on Netflix are the only two that come to mind similar to your list and I laughed and enjoyed both

Someone. with teenage kids, what do they watch and laugh at? Do they watch 90s/2000s comedies?

Made me think of Napoleon Dynamite.

Came out of nowhere. Nothing like it.

Jim Carrey had a similar moment. Or several moments. Pet Detective was from another galaxy.

Yeah comedy obviously faces obstacles, but genres like comedy and horror are always cyclical and in many ways based around those contemporary obstacles and the "mood" of the people. There are always "good" and "bad" phases of horror and comedy, and in large part that's b/c both are the 2 genres that can create a unicorn (low budget + insane returns) that then oversaturates the market.

The back to back blow of the Apatow era (which had its silly moments but was far too straight and dramedy to qualify for this thread) leading into the woke era has been real rough for comedy, though.

ETA: same thing is going to happen to horror. People are going to get tired of prestige horror and the costs will make producing them -EV. Then we'll go into a bad era of horror for a while until something hits the Zeitgeist and shows they can be profitable again.
