re: Disney’s “Strange World” Bombs

Puss in Boots did a soft opening over Thanksgiving and is getting rave reviews. I bet it will make a ton of money because parents want decent entertainment options. All the excuses of why this and Lightyear failed are just stupid. People refuse to acknowledge the elephant in the room.

These fricking people.
The fact that these movies always bomb leads me to two conclusions:
1. There are not as many of them out there as social media would lead us to believe, or
2. There are many of them out there, but they rarely support these movies they claim they want with their wallets.

None of these are a problem on their own.
Correct. If a good story were incorporated or these issues dealt with in a thoughtful, creative fashion it could be a positive. I would have concerns about how they deal with it in product directed at children, but that's a different question for a different time.
But, what we have here is diversity as both a substitute for quality storytelling and some sort of #Woke shield against criticism of the product.
That is the current Hollywood (particularly Disney/Marvel) game plan, frankly going back to roughly 2016 "Ghostbusters".

So we assume that making money is paramount to Disney, but I think we are trying to apply our own common sense to the situation, and I don’t think it applies. If they wanted to make money, they could easily make a killing on movies by just not doing this woke stuff.
It's a business though, so it very much applies IMO. As "woke" as Disney is sometimes, it ultimately is a business that is supposed to generate maximum dollars for its shareholders. And if it pushes too far into the woke agendas, it won't do that. And it will have to shift away from it toward what makes money.
And IMO it's slowly happening as evidenced from the audience reactions (and lack of spent dollars) to movies like this one.

Woke Twitter is blaming Disneys lack of advertising. They’re going so far as to say that Disney wanted this movie to fail on purpose so they could show that a gay lead doesn’t sell. They are truly insane. Disney isn’t going to lose $150 million and who knows how much more in stock value because of this movie just as an I-Told-You-So moment for the group of people they’ve been pandering to for almost 5 years now.
Disney dropped the advertising because they knew it was a bomb based on test screenings. Why spend $70 mill more when it would only gain you an extra $5-10 million? Not to mention they couldn’t release it in China or the Middle East and lots of other smaller markets.
I was saying in the other thread how I can't see Iger blowing hundreds of millions more on these fringe activist expeditions. Some posters were saying no, Iger is the one pushing it. What do you think ell?

Iger is a California Democrat who has considered going into politics possibly even a presidential run. Chapek is getting the blame, but these movies were greenlit under Iger. If he still has politics on his mind, it may inform how he handles this in the future. Does he want the votes of the woke people he is pandering to or does he want to be seen as the CEO who completely ruined Disney? I don't think he can have it both ways.

You have to wonder at what point will Disney decide to stop losing money on woke garbage and start producing quality content again

They need to be more “Andor” less “Obi-Wan Kenobi” using the most recent Disney+ series as analogy.

I took the wife’s kids to see strange world and they/them really enjoyed it but we aren’t raising them in a house of hate like some of y’all. I didn’t realize the main character could show her penis so many times in a pg movie

The Iger move is political, PR move. Parks people hated Chapek. Florida politicians hated Chapek. Iger is meant to trick fans using nostalgia into thinking Disney will change. Iger isn’t there to bring change. He’s there to distract and bump the stock for the next CEO in two years.

90% of social media interactions meant to lead public sentiment aren't real. They're astroturfed attempts at seeding chosen narratives. Why do you think they fought so hard to keep Musk from taking over at Twitter, and lost their minds in the effort to keep dissenting thought from impacting social media?

It's not a penis it's a fenis when they change their pronouns.

Two kid movies in a row they have totally missed their target audience
Not to mention Turning Red was horrible as well and was a loss financially but some of that was due to covid
What parent in their right mind would want to take their kids to see these movies
Luca was about the only decent one they put out recently
Encanto made a profit and did well but it was terrible

11.9 million through the holiday so far. It cost $180 million to make. It will gross less than Lightyear. Why? Full woke. Climate change metaphor. Almost no white characters. Main teenage character is gay and has a SO. Biracial parents.
I have a feeling that these studios putting out this woke crap are being subsidized by the fedgov to get this messaging out there.

Wait till you learn that Mark Zuckerberg didn't invent Facebook in his Harvard dorm, and who's really behind that.

Climate change metaphor.
I haven't watched the trailer but looking at the description this doesn't seem to be a focal point. Is this ONE metaphor or the entire movie being a metaphor about climate change? If I had a kid I probably wouldn't let him watch this if the main character is LGBTQ (and this flopping makes me smile), but kids do need to learn about climate change because science is a real thing

Being Woke is totally why it bombed. Disney/Pixar used to be able to put out anything, and it would print money. They have lost the trust that parents had after the whole Lightyear debacle and after their agenda was made public.
