So, basically, frick Carl.
I don't think Carl realized how crappy his freshman year of high school is going to be after doing what he did.
Just put up a little struggle, take the paddling, and move on with life.

I think if you didn't watch this as a teenager (especially a teenager who partied), it's very hard to get how fun/sentimental this movie was. Every character was someone you partied with, someone you were friends with.
The girls were especially accurate. There was a Parker Posey hard partying bitch, was just dead on. I think anybody who grew up in pre Internet age can relate in just about everything in this movie.
We wore the VHS copy of this movie OUT, man! It was so exhaled among pretty much everyone who partied at my high school that it was on in the background of parties.
You are absolutely right about why some people love it and some don't. Some people see it as a fairly accurate portrayal of their youth in the '70s, '80s. So there's a ton of nostalgia. Other people grew up partying with this movie as their model, watching it incessantly and comparing characters to their friends. So there's a ton of nostalgia. Other people didn't party, weren't like this crowd and just can't connect with it.
For my age group it was like the Holy Grail of movies. There's a phenomenon in Texas when you go off to college in-state where eventually everyone you meet from a small town will at some point state that Dazed and Confused was based on their town and really earnestly believe it. I remember arguments over it between two or three guys who all believed that Dazed was based on their town. If you look into it, it was based on Link's youth in Huntsville, but the power of the movie is how true it feels to everyone, to the point that a whole generation of small-town kids in Texas ALL thought it was based on their town.

love this movie.. outside of the paddling part, that's exactly how my high school years were.

Went to college with a dude like this. Took it into his 30's. Remember seeing him at a Mardi Gras parade. He had to be 33-34 at the time. Letting a high school girl in the crowd drink his beer. Me and another friend told him he will end up in jail.

Yeah, I don't think it would've ended well in my high school town if the seniors to be decided to hunt down all of the freshmen to be with the intent to paddle their arse.
But everything else in that movie hit home for me.

This and mallrats were my test for girls in college
I would always pop in the Dvd at my apartment and see if they liked them or not. If they did, it was go time!

And the way my senior class was allowed to get away with a whole lot of stuff at the school.
I remember I had an accounting class for 1st period, and some mornings I'd have already put my book at my desk in the classroom. I'd then go out hang in the hall, and my friends would decide to ditch 1st period and go burn one before school. So I'd go back into the classroom, grab my books, and tell the teacher that she hadn't seen me. She'd just tell me that if I got caught, not to drag her into it.
Hell, halfway through my senior year they installed cameras in the parking lot and the bathrooms, but decided to wait until the next year to turn them on because they didn't want to deal with our class. Hell, we probably had 6 senior skip days my senior year.
Unfortunately for the Juniors, they cracked down full force that following year.

Anybody else shave heads? That was our school thing. New seniors would shave the 10th graders heads. It was a tradition for all of my school years.

Except for the paddling part, this movie just nailed the atmosphere of when I was in high school in South Florida (class of '82). That transitional period from the stereotyped 70s (disco, polyester, etc) to what people think of the 80s (Members Only jackets, Madonna wannabes, etc) - Linklater got it almost perfectly with this film.
