I've been kicking this around in my mind since this thread was posted. I can't think of anyone other than Jim Carrey that could have pulled off Ace Ventura.

Maybe… maaaaaaaybe early 90s Nic Cage on the right bag of blow. It wouldn’t have hit like Jim though.

Speaking of blow, maybe Robin Williams.

Early Nick cage was originally supposed to play Jeff Daniel’s character in Dumb and Dumber, but the studio refused to want to discuss negotiating a higher fee when it came out how much bank they threw at Carrey.
Daniel’s was second choice, but the studio didn’t like him so they gave him the insultingly low fee of 50k

Wow. To this day, still the hardest I’ve ever laughed in a movie theatre was when he got to Mary’s house and had his stomach nuked by Lloyd, with him driving on his scooter laughing like the wicked witch.

1994 was a beast of a year for Carey. Lots in interesting trivia in this article.
Interesting. So he landed ace and the mask from his in living color performance and then landed dumb and dumber and Batman off his ace performance.

Dan Marino was perfectly cast
agreed.
if I had to pick anyone on the planet to play Dan Marino, it would definitely be him.
*sorry, couldn't pass it up*

He was in multiple shite/bomb b-movies in the 80s.
I watched Earth Girls Are Easy and Once Bitten last week. Both movies suck but you can clearly see how talented Carrey is, even at that young age.
I couldn't believe Earth Girls had Geena Davis, Jim Carrey, Damon Wayans, and Jeff Goldblum

Only other scene that has had the same effect for me was the kkk mask bit in Django Unchained. In both, I was cry laughing until I couldn’t breathe. Carrey’s run in 94 probably did more to form my sense of humor as a kid than just about anything else.

fyi, he also explained this on the howard stern show years back, it was an awesome interview. look it up

Once Bitten
Forgot about this movie. It was one of those movies that HBO would play constantly when I was a kid.

Apparently Jack Bernstein wrote the story. he has no other movie credits. Did a handful of TV show episodes of various stuff.

Steve Martin in his heyday. But not better than Carrey did it.

-Carrey took the project basically as his last shot to make it and basically said 'fuk it, I'm going all out for once in my career for a film'
Why would this has been his last shot? He was locked in for the Mask. He wasn't first up for Dumb and Dumber though so Ace Ventura probably played a role in him getting that job. He was one of the funniest parts of one of the funniest shows on TV and had some movie success, highly doubt it was a last ditch effort.

The script is trash. The movie is stupid. It only works because Jim Carrey went all out with the stupidity.
this ^^^^^^^^^^
being a buffoon isnt acting, he just did his tired old jerry louis idiot routine and made a career out of it

I don't even think he was the 2nd choice. Saw an interview with Daniels a few weeks ago and he was talking about when they started filming the movie. They began with some of the Aspen scenes (wasn't really Aspen) and they did a few with Jim and then for a few days Jim wasn't on set and he was doing scenes by himself and with Mary. He realized a few days in that they were basically still trying him out and would have cut him if they didn't like how he was doing. Said that Jim wanted him and was in his corner the whole time though.

One of those rare situations where the sequel clearly exceeds the original
The first AV has a few funny jokes but the comedy is primarily delivered by Carrey being Carrey. The second AV would be a hilarious movie without Carrey in it at all, although he helped elevate it to another level.

Respectfully, I don't know how you can say this. There is no AV without Carrey. There have ever only been a few truly unique actors/comedians that could have the kind of range Carrey has both with his comedy and his serious roles. Robin Williams is another, like someone else mentioned. You remove Carrey from AV:WNC and it doesn't work. It only ever worked because of Carrey and how outlandish he is as a person.
