okay can we clear this up, that theory, while extremely popular and has been for years, was not some black and white obvious theory unless you are lookin for it. It's a lot of small anecdotal evidence that people had 20 years to discect and find out what GRRM intended in his writing.

Meh, it was clear to me after reading the first book back in 98ish. All of the discussions about Ned's honor, and how he even refused to discuss Jon's parentage with his wife made it clear Jon wasn't his son.

The promise me Ned made it clear Jon was Lyanna's. Rhaegar being the dad was not explicit at that point of course, but the kingsguard being there made it very likely.

Much like Renly being gay, it was there very early if you read carefully and read between the lines well. It's not like people needed some crazy insight to come to the conclusion.

More common than most think.

I mean its obvious when you go back and read it , knowing what you know from the internet. Knowing what to look for in dreams and visions etc

but for people just initially reading the book 20 years ago ... I don't think it was THAT obvious.

I read the first two books out of sequence, (never heard of GRRM at the time, just picked up the paperback CofK at a pharmacy), but reading Dany's vision in the House of the Undying first really highlighted Ned and Robert's conversation in the crypts at WF early in GofT.

When I first read AGoT way back when...the TOJ initially went right over my head. It was only later toward the end of the book, after the 2nd or 3rd "Promise me, Ned" that it finally clicked. I went back and re-read it, and had a total nerd-gasm.

I thought I was so frigging smart...until I web searched "Jon Snow's mother A Game of Thrones" and for the first time saw "R+L=J" written out.
Silly me, thinking I was among the first to see it.
Not EVEN close.

But, I did call my college room-mate (the one that pushed the book on me in the first place) and explained the theory. His response was:

"Ahhhhh...I think you're reaching there, Bubba."

This guy was completing his Ph.D. in English Lit. at the time.

I won't say it's hard to catch (cuz I did) but I agree, you have to be looking for it. Ned's refusal to discuss the mother is basically the starting gun IMO.

I've read the series twice and still didn't pick up on any homosexuality besides Cersie and Dany.

Not trying to be a dick because I know others who did the same as you but your gaydar wasn't buzzing with Loras and Jon Con?

Jaime talking to loras- "I'll stick it in a place even Renly couldn't find"
Loras talking to tyrion- "When the sun has set, no candle can replace it"

And the most obvious
Jon Con- "My silver prince"

There just isn't any other explanation for Ned to repeatedly have that memory. Plus, there's a pretty short list of reasons for Lyanna to be in a blood-covered bed.

From what I remember, there was a lot of other people (second and third hand sources) basically just being assholes to Renly and Loras about it.

It's very subtle, IMO.

I didn't get anything from Jon Connington. Guess I need to go back and re-read that one.

Of course, maybe I'm just so progressive and hip that it doesn't matter at all to me.

Definitely reread his griffin's roost chapter. He has multiple quotes about Rhaegar that make it obvious he was in love with him.

If Jon Con's thoughts about Rhaegar were about a girl, everyone and their mama would pick up that he was in love with the character. But since it's another guy, some people overlook it.

Exactly what happened with me, especially since talking about Rhaegar.

Not so much a theory as a mystery:

Where is Blackfyre and Dark Sister?

Blackfyre was last seen in The Golden Company's possession, until the last of House Blackfyre died...from then on, MIA.

Dark Sister was with Bloodraven until/when he went to the Wall.

The only crackpot theory I have on Blackfyre is that it's hidden in plain sight among the swords in the Iron Throne-Not twisted or melted, just wedged up in there somewhere- but I admit I have zero evidence...it would've had to have been brought back from Essos, snuck in and...well I just think it's an awesome hiding place for a sword, really.

Dark Sister.
I don't buy Jeor's story at all. "Here's a (literally) priceless family heirloom, because I like you and you saved my life. Sorry the wolf handle still looks like a drag-er, I mean, a bear..."

No, I don't think so.

I think BR entrusted it to Maester Aemon (who, incidentally, requested to be posted at the Wall AFTER Aegon V (Egg) allowed BR to take the Black, even accompanying him on the ride north).
The Dunk and Egg tales hint that BR had the Greensight long before he took the Black or became the 3ER ("Bloodraven sees with a thousand eyes and one")

So BR could've foreseen all kinds of shite...maybe it's been there waiting for Jon for a long time?

I just hope there's more to it than Meera grabbing the first sword handy when they abandon the tree-cave.

OK. A ton of the theories, crackpot and not, have been resolved. So here's a few admittedly very vague guesses about S7:

Kings Landing: Not many people left for Cersei to interact with until and unless Danny and company show up. Of course they set it up for some Cersei/Jamie drama. Other than that the only ones I can think of that might play a part with her are Littleginger, Randyl Tarly and maybe Euron.

The Norf: Obviously there is going to be some Littlefinger scheming. I think it would be kind of weird to set up a really strong Sansa/Jon split. Other than that? Maybe rewarding allies and punishing foes? Are they gonna set up Wildings with marriages in places like the Umbers and Karstark's keeps? Who will get the Dreadfort? And preparing to feed everyone and defend against the White Walkers of course. Oh, and I kind of half expect next season to start with Jon telling the Northerners something like "Er, thanks for the whole King of the North thing but I'll take a pass for now. Didn't work out too good for Rob and plus I have one sister definitely alive and another sister and brother who are possibly alive".

Oldtown: As one of the few who actually like the Sam storyline (even though he is incredibly aggravating sometimes), I hope they show him learning some great stuff. And maybe a little run in with Randyl and Dickon. I'd love to see a little Marwyn the Mage. Cause Sam is gonna need a crash course if he wants to learn anything before it's too late.

Wherever Danny ends up: No telling here. She certainly does have a very motley group Dothraki, Iron Born, Dornishmen, men from the Reach, Unsullied. Could be a bit of tension there I guess. Otherwise I guess it's trying to make more alliances and/or negotiate her taking power.
