ETA: posted before I searched.

I must say this is the best film I've watched in a while. There's no other film like it I can think of. Writer/director Richard Linklater made an epic film starting in 2002 following the lives of two children (ages 6 & 8) for 12 years. Scripts were written for the young actors based on their developing personalities over the years. It stars Patricia Arquette and Ethan Hawke as the divorced parents of the two youths and was filmed on weekends and between other projects for the actors. IFC gave Linklater 200k a year for 12 years to make it.

The movie is filmed in Houston, San Marcos & Austin and this may appeal to me more than others because these are the same places I grew up.

I can't say anything more about the film other than it may not be for everyone and it's not a "Slackers" type indie film that you might expect from my description. The scope is bold and the act of watching two kids grow and mature on screen is pretty amazing.

It is the best movie of the year and one of the few masterpieces of the past two decades.

Only reason I even saw this was because it was playing on a 17 hour flight overseas.

I'm glad I did, because it was definitely a good movie. Funny how watching these characters grow up makes you get attached to them in a unique way, to where I couldn't get this movie out of my head several days after I saw it. There are few that do that to me.

I also felt the themes they hit on were very deep and not the typical things movies discuss.

I didn't like Ethan Hawke before, not really sure why (maybe Training Day aside,) but I thought he was great in this.

Also, the guy who plays her alcoholic husband was great! That whole piece was really good, I thought.

It was good and enjoyable, but not a masterpiece. Had it not been for the 12 year shoot, it would have been a pretty boring movie. Since it had no plot and was basically a series of vignettes, Linklater relied almost entirely on the emotional connection you had with the actors to get you through the movie, which dragged at times before picking back up.

I really enjoyed it. Cool concept that required a lot of patience.

Also, Patricia Arquette got fat.

Yep. He had to rely on the emotions and having the mom constantly break up with guys, often through violence, despite not developing that very much.

While it is one of the better movies I've seen in a long time and the scope and audacity of it carries it over the top into greatness, by the time the kid was graduating high school, I was getting restless. It was definitely not a masterpiece, but it is a great piece of cinema and because of the concept and relatively well done execution, it will go down in the annals of filmmaking as something that will likely never be duplicated.

Yea, I can dig that. But I wouldn't say "no plot" and that was a pretty powerful connection; think it hit close to home for a lot of people in the theater.

Agree to disagree. Was glued to my seat.

It's a brilliant film. Even though it's nearly 3 hours long, having 12 years pass gives the impression that time is flying by. That helps the movie hit on that point and the fact that it only slows down for little milestones along the way. Arquette was brilliant. Hawke was great. Coltrane was solid.

The kid turned into a whiny, emo loser towards the end. I think that was the main problem. If the main character was more likeable people might like the movie more. A lot of Linklater's movies don't have much of a plot but the characters are better so people don't complain.

is a polite way of saying this....

and i agree 100%. the hype behind the movie is based on the technical merits of filming over a 12 year period. the plot was really lacking and had it been filmed with different actors playing the characters at different ages in life it wouldn't receive nearly the acclaim its getting.

Definitely my favorite movie of the year. Seeing people age on screen like that is amazing. And understanding all that went into making the movie just makes it that much better. You'd think it would look like 12 different movies combined into 1, but it really wasn't. It flowed really well.
Slam dunk Oscar wins for Linklater and for editing. Soundtrack was exceptional as well, particularly the song playing as Mason was driving out west.
