Saw it last night and I thought it was fantastic.
Probably the most feminist movie I've seen in a while. Maybe not feminist in the sense of female empowerment but that of female anxiety.
I settled down this morning. some of the film's aspects were a little sensationalist: peeling finger skin off, Ryder's injuries and self-inflicted wounds, the music in the last 15 minutes that keeps driving at crescendo making it impossible to not feel enveloped and pushed toward the denouement (which are also my gripes about Requiem for a Dream).
Anywho, overall I thought it was a great movie. It was painful and beautiful. Most of the time the suspense and dark psychology was well pitched. That scene where Natalie Portman calls her mother from inside the bathroom stall to tell her she landed the role of the Swan Queen exhibited some incredible facial expressions. I wish they awarded mini Oscars for scenes like that. She almost had me crying with her.

Portman nails it. Hershey nails it. Kunis nails it. Aranofsky turns what could have been a cliched ballet script into something totally different. Something so beautiful has never seemed so oppressive. Something so graceful has never seemed so tense.
This movie haunted my dreams last night.

Her role in Black Swan kind of parallels her real life, no? Once bright starlet aged and replaced by younger, fresher talent...

I just finished watching this. It was spectacular. Portman has won an Oscar. What a fantastic job by Aronofsky. Brilliant film. I don't think there are enough superlatives or platitudes for what this film deserves.

Because my take was that what "died" was the caged image of herself that would never allow her to become the "Black Swan"... that which her teacher kept trying to break her from....I saw it as a breaking free from her former self.

I think she died, for three main reasons. First off because Cassel's remark that Ryder's character succeeded so spectacularly in her heyday because of her ability to draw from 'a dark place' which eventually led to self destructive obsession. Because Portman's character seemed to follow the same path (paraphrasing: "I know what you mean about those other girls wanting your spot. I just want to be perfect like you!") as Ryder's, so they both reach levels of performance perfection that equate to at the least, immobility and ill health, and at worse, death.
As it's already been mentioned, the film's plot mirrors Swan Lake. The prince (vincent cassel's character) falls in love with the wrong character (the idealized black swan that he manipulated into fruition), driving the white swan to kill herself.
I presume that the recurring images have to be real, because the hallucinations seemed to be fleeting and only linked thematically. The recurring images I'm speaking of are Portman's self-inflicted wounds. The back scratches and ragged toe nails. So because each of these wounds were self-inflicted they are real through repetition of being shown. The mirror injury was self inflicted. My logic follows that this self-inflicted injury is thus real and in the end fatal

there is no definitive answer. her intention to take it to that action doesn't mean that she actually succeeds in doing so.
also, don't understand how anyone would say that Portman hadn't had a fulfilling career. She's been wonderful in almost everything she's been in.
Her turn in Closer was nothing short of brilliant.

Actually that's another tiny gripe, or at least ambiguity of whether I liked it or not, about the movie: the 'that was awkwardly funny' scenes. like the end of her 'bate scene, when she drags pseudo-Kunis' body into the bathroom, when the black swan nonchalantly says 'hey' to her during the performance. They seemed off pitch rather than cathartic moments of comedy.

i had to watch alot of this between my fingers. sick arse finernail, toenail, and skin scenes. but overall i loved the movie
