I entitled this post "How History Is Made" because it reflects how I would have liked this series to end. We've known since the beginning of this show that all the endeavors and feats of Captain Flint and Long John Silver had to end.

Piracy has to end, and civilization inevitably prevails. But does its legacy survive?

We only know about these larger than life characters from the tales passed down generations. And like Jack says, truth doesn't matter. History is made by those who wield the power to write it. A lesson for modern times as well.

Jack's ultimate punishment for Woodes Rogers was his ultimate reward -- to have a hand in writing his legacy. And that for him was worse than Blackbeard's torture and death. Indeed, we can compare the Wikipedia pages on the actual historical figures.

Overall, great series that deeply explored complex themes like loyalty, truth, sacrifice, family, and legacy. The characters were great, the stories outstanding, and the finale exceptional. I give it an A-.

frick that, I wanted to see Woodes Rogers get dragged under the boat.
I also wanted Billy to die.
Good episode overall though. I would have sex with Max if she'd let me.

I didn't like it. There were 3 really crappy things in previous episodes that set up a crappy ending.

1. Flint buys off on Eleanor’s offer to trade the cache for the fort. Accepting that was the opposite of what Flint’s character had been set up to be – no way would he take a chance like that.
2. Rogers gets the Spanish to help him. Rogers by this time had one raggy ship and a few dozen red coats. Exposited was that the Spanish had 12 ships and 1,000 infantry. If they had had that disparity of force they wouldn’t need Rogers to come and ask them to help. They would have been all over Nassau.
3. That Rogers would take such a risk only to realize –too late- that marauding Spanish soldiers, or pirates, or maroons or slaves, might just happen to come across his wife.

There was some bad writing in the last season. I didn't like the finale at all. I wanted Flint dead. Screw this happy ending crap. Screw Rackham showing up exactly at the right time to defeat Rogers and save the day. Screw Flint going to the home for boy love in South Carolina. Nuh-uh. All bad. And why did Rackham tell "Mark" Read that there would be no piracy, none at all, in Nassau and then go to his ship and see the reveal of his almost complete' skull and cross bones' flag? Nuh-uh. All crap. The whole finale.

You realize the series was gonna end this way, if only to fall in line with Treasure Island, right?

There was always a certain amount of ambiguity with some characters if they didn't have a story to tell in Treasure Island, but all our players in that book ended up about where they should be.

I do think season 2 and 3 were the best, but overall this was a great series.

Rogers ending was approoriate. It was very clear that shitting all over his reputation was a fate worse than death for him. Not that I didn't want to see him keelhauled but it was definitely appropriate and reflective of how cerebral Jack Rackham could be.

I love the nod to Mary Reed joining up with Bonnie and Rackham. As well as the revelation of the Jolly Roger.

All in all I enjoyed the finale. It stayed true to the series, was a well-written season, and definitely laid the groundwork for Treasure Island.

A little ashamed to say I never read Treasure Island, though I think it will be next on my list, but what is the significance of John Silver's backstory? Flynn asks him and he never gives him an answer. Is it mentioned in the book?

Keel-Hauling, y'all.

It's some real-world shite that was done, too....sometimes stern to bow, even.

Billy is marooned on an island.

Worse than death possibly.

On an island where he murdered his brothers for, what? A few days of company with the governor?

I thought the end was damn good

After reading on reddit since no one here watches this great show:

The writers were thinking of a backstory for him to reveal, but couldn't come up with anything that would be good enough for the audience to accept. Instead they left it as him not coming from anything special at all, but still becoming a legendary pirate captain to contrast that of Flint (who came from a British Naval background)

So is Treasure Island going to be made into a series to follow this? Haven't read the book yet. Loved this show. Could have been much better without the gay slant but I guess that's the times we live in now where every producer has to throw something in.

Flint did die. Notice they cut away from Silver with his pistol pointed at Flint, next shot is of three pirates quickly turning their heads to look up the hill as you hear the birds chirping like they were just startled. Then the pirates walk up the hill. Silver shot Flint. Silver made up the story he told about Thomas Hamilton and Flint at the prison camp. Kind of like telling a kid how their dog went to go live on a happy farm in the country when the dog is actually dead.

Then why did he send a man to locate Flint's guy? If he was gonna lie about that, why even include that scene? Face it, he got a happy ending.

The place probably exists. Silver probably sent a guy to investigate it. But the odds of Thomas being there aren't very good. The story adds to the lore. Rackham's story about Flint leaving the account was much more palatable to those that would've continued to back Flint.
